Slave like labor was reportedly being forced on Apple Macintosh iPod workers by “Mail on Sunday.”

The news hit MacRumors.com that Apple workers were being treated extremely unfairly overseas.  The rumors of conditions resemble that of sweat shops.

According to “Mail on Sunday” the workers in the Apple factories are working 15 hour days for $50 a month.  In one of Apple’s other iPod factories which was closer to Shanghai workers were being paid $100 per month and had to work 12 hour days.  The security guards were also paid poorly at $150 per month.

The long hours and low wages were also companied by military like drills.  Workers who were staying at Apple’s factory were also forced to pay much of their wages back in room and board.  An estimated $25 was taken out of their wages for living expenses on site.

Apple has stated that they do not run the actual factories but will take the accusations very seriously and are currently looking into the situation.  According to playlistmag.com Apple said, “We do not tolerate any sort of supplier misconduct.”

Apple.com’s supplier code of conduct clearly reports they must pay in full minimum wage rates, overtime hours, and other legally required laws.

Apple Macintosh iPod’s are supplied by a company called Hon Hai.  According to the sources listed above these types of conditions are common in the electronic and technology industries.  Apple says they will continue to look into these accusations and make sure workers are treated fairly again.
