2008 WSOP Odds

The final table is set for the WSOP 2008 Main Event and the nine contenders are being referred to as the November Nine, because play will resume now only in November.

And while ESPN airs WSOP 2008 events in order to build up momentum for the grand finale, gambling of another kind will be taking over from poker.

Poker fans all over the world will be flocking to betting exchanges like Sportsbook.com and placing wagers on who they think will be crowned the king of poker. Most betting exchanges have already put up their odds and the hunt is on for the most favorable of them all.

But first a look at the nine men who made it to the short list and what they expect to win. Dennis Phillips of the U.S. leads the pack with 26,295,000 chips. Then follow Ivan Demidov of Russia with 24,400,000; Scott Montgomery of Canada with 19,690,000, Peter Eastgate of Denmark with 18,375,000; Ylon Schwartz of the U.S. with 12,525,000; Darus Suharto of Canada with 12,520,000; David Chino Rheem of the U.S. with 10,230,000, Craig Marquis of the U.S. with 10,210,000 and Kelly Kim with 2,620,000.  The distribution of the prize money is as follows. The winner will get a whopping $9,119,517 and the runner up will get $5,790,024. Thereafter the prizes keep decreasing more or less uniformly with $900,670 for the 9th place.

The most popular bet is for who will be the winner. Most betting exchanges are currently following the order of chip count in giving the odds. A few like PartyBets and PaddyPower put Rheem ahead of Schwartz and Suharto. The betting exchanges are assuming that Rheem will sort out his problems with the law and will be at the table in November despite the warrant issued for his arrest. PaddyPower and SportingBet give 4 to 1 for Phillips and Demidov whereas PartyBets gives them 5 to 1. On the other hand PaddyPower and SportingBet give 50 to 1 for Kim whereas PartyBets gives him 26 to 1. If players want to place high-risk bets on those at the bottom of the list then the odds at SportingBet are the best. But if players want to go with the favorites then the odds at PartyBets are definitely better.

There are plenty of other bets on offer. For example bettors can place a wager on the nationality of the winner. The United States has five players and betting on this country gives odds that are marginally better than even money. SportingBet gives the best odds for the other countries with Canada getting 5 to 2, Russia getting 4 to 1 and Denmark getting 11 to 2. SportingBet is also giving odds on who will be the first one to be eliminated. No odds have been given for Kim, which reflects the expectation that he really cannot do much with his low chip count. Otherwise the odds are in consonance with the players’ rankings. Another interesting bet is on the type of the winning hand, that is the hand that decides the first place – the last hand played in WSOP 2008. The odds at SportingBet go from 8 to 5 for One Pair to 50 to 1 for Full House, 4 of a Kind and Straight Flush.
