Annette on Cover of Bluff Europe

She may not be stunningly sexy as some of the other women poker players and may have an aversion to dropping clothes unlike Catgirl.

But Annette Obrestad has done enough in the world of poker to feature on the cover of the September issue of Bluff Europe.

Annette was born in Norway in September 1988. Annette entered the world of poker at the tender age of 15 through online play using the alias “Annette_15”. She has never used her own funds to build up a bankroll, but relied solely on winnings from freerolls.  Annette began to hit the hot spots of online poker sites in a big way from 2006. Between September 2006 and February 2007 she amassed $500,000 on PokerStars, $200,000 on UltimateBet, and $136,000 on Full Tilt Poker. Annettes’s online tournament record is also excellent and so is her flair for grandstanding.  In 2006 she secured the seventh place on PokerStars’ WCOOP $2500 Main Event. But created a controversy by writing on a blog that someone else had played for her. In 2007 Annette won a $4 buy-in online sit-and-go tournament. Annette later claimed that she had seen her cards only once in this tournament when she was all-in. She attributed her victory to her ability to play position and to read her opponents. Her ability to win online tournaments continues unabated in 2008 with wins on PokerStars and Betfair.

Though her achievements in the world of online poker are impressive it is nothing compared to what she did in the WSOP Europe inaugural event of 2007. In that single event she turned the record books upside down when she won the £10,000 Main Event. That single win made her the youngest ever WSOP bracelet winner, the first ever woman Main Event winner and the winner of the first WSOP Main Event in Europe. At that point in time the WSOPE Main Event was the largest buy-in Main Event in WSOP history. The $2.01 million prize was the largest won by a female player, narrowly edging out Annie Duke’s $2 million win at the 2004 Tournament of Champions. Annette almost won her second live tournament title in November 2007. However she had to settle for second place in the EPT Dublin event after being chip leader throughout most of the final table. The irony for this great player is that she cannot compete in the Las Vegas WSOP till 2010 because Nevada laws do not permit players under 21 to gamble.

Bluff Europe interviews Annette on the eve of WSOPE 2008 to find out what she has been doing of late and what her future plans are. The September issue also features Annette’s colleagues at Betfair Poker, John Tabatabai and Sorel Mizzi. Some other questions that Bluff Europe addresses in this issue are just how unlucky is Mike “The Mouth” Matusow, why did Phil Laak play Day 1 of the WSOP Main Event disguised as a strange old man, what the hell was Scotty Nguyen drinking while winning the prestigious $50,000 HORSE event and why do most poker movies suck.
