The first of the series of the $10 million dollar buy-in tournaments have been cancelled. The tournaments were set to take place on July 12th.
The tournaments were going to be supported by FSN and MansionPoker. The tournament set to take place in 2006 was going to be a $10 million dollar buy-in tournament proceeding up to tournaments at $75 and $100 million in years 2007 and 2008. All three tournaments would have been a $10 million dollar buy-in with 6 players in 2006 leading up to 10 players in 2008.The only player that we know who signed up for the tournament was Phil Ivey. It is undetermined if Phil was going to play with his own money or if someone was going to stake him.
The tournaments would have been 1 day tournaments held down under at the Crown Casino in Melbourne. Time frame for these competitions would have been 6-10 hours long with the winner taking the entire purse. There was going to be no second or third place for this $10 million dollar buy in monster tournament.
FSN’s (Fox Sports Net) production executive George Greenberg said they could not run the tournament because of another poker show they were planning to air. They just ran out of time, resources, and labor requirements were an issue to run both shows at once. The event they decided to continue with will be a 43 show series called the Poker Dome Challenge.
The tournament is not necessarily cancelled but put on hold. Viewers will have to wait until 2007 to see if FSN plans to continue with this big idea. Phil Ivey still plans to play in the tournament if all goes well with the event coordination.
