On Wednesday this week, news broke that Alex Rodriguez, the Major League baseball player, was under investigation for his alleged participation in an underground poker network. Since then, much speculation has been doing the rounds in the poker and sports worlds, although nothing has been able to be proven until now.
The MLB is said to be keen to investigate the allegations as Rodriguez was warned to stay away from poker games in 2005. The fact that he may have been involved with illegal poker games once more where, reportedly, cocaine was freely used and some of the games turned violent, means that the MLB wants to get to the bottom of this.
It seems that the primary source of the information, one Dan Bilzerian, says that A-Rod wasn’t even present at one of the games that are being investigated, saying that he was playing in the World Series at the time. A-Rod’s publicist also came out with a brief statement which read: “The story contains numerous factual inaccuracies and Alex looks forward to cooperating with MLB in their investigation.”
The publicist was asked whether A-Rod had ever been involved in illegal poker games, to which he replied: “I’m sticking with my statement.”
One of the allegations was that A-Rod was present at games with stars such as Tobey Maguire, Leo diCaprio and Ben Affleck. Another allegation said that he had played against Pete Sampras, the tennis champ. All these games allegedly took place in November 2009 in a Beverly Hills mansion owned by Cody Leibel.
“Not only has Alex played in a game with Pete Sampras, Alex has never met Pete Sampras,” said his publicist. “The tabloid reporting is preposterous!”
