Talk about pure Russian stalwart staying power! Online poker player innerpsy showed them all what willpower is all about after setting a new record for playing the most number of hands in a 24 hour period.
The player had everyone gob smacked when he went on for hour after hour after hour… and played a total of 40,088 poker hands in 18 hours and 33 minutes.
The record was set on Saturday when innerpsy sat down at 8.30 am to begin the poker marathon of his life. Over 18.5 hours later, the Russian finally called it quits, but not before ensuring that the world record was safely in his back pocket.
The event was held at Poker Stars and hosted by the Russian poker forum Card Game Masters. As many as 10,000 fans, a great deal hailing from Russia, turned out to watch the two video streaming feeds that showed innerpsy battling fatigue and concentration problems.
“Before this challenge, I had never actually played more than 20,000 hands in a day before, but the idea came up and I just figured I could do it,” said a delighted innerpsy. “It was one of the toughest things I have ever accomplished, but I am proud I managed it.”
Card Player magazine tried to showcase the massive task faced by innerpsy: “Give the dealer 30 hands per hour. We’ll be generous again and figure you can sit still for ten hours. That means you saw around 300 hands between the time you started playing and the time you got up for the night. With that total, you’d be a little short of the new world record.”
22 year old innerpsy added: “I gained a lot of experience doing this and will definitely try it gain in order to improve upon my result. One of my main goals is also to reach Supernova Elite status.”
Innerpsy is a regular player at PokerStars and has been “for a couple of years,” according to the site.
