Amanda Leatherman Newscaster or News?

Written by Matt W | Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Today in the world of media, be it sports or politics or entertainment, the person reporting the news is as much in the news as the person making the news.

The same applies to the world of poker, where Amanda Leatherman holds her own with the likes of Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth.

And she can do this despite being petite because she packs a punch in her small frame.

Amanda hails from “good ol’” North Carolina. She started playing online poker when she was 17. She got hooked on the game so much that she moved to Las Vegas before she was 21 with a backpack and a boy friend. But live gambling was a different kettle of fish and Amanda was soon broke. Fortune favors the bold. At that time Full TiltPokerWire were looking for a tournament reporter and Amanda swung the job. That is how she came into the world of poker reporting. From written reports she moved to camera hosting. Today she works for PokerRoad and moonlights for PokerNews.

Amanda has a love hate relationship with her job. She loves the travel and being part of the poker fraternity – working by day and partying by night. And she says she hates sleeping alone after watching scary movies. Thankfully with all that working and partying she must not be getting very much time to sleep. The worst part of all that traveling is that it puts an end to normal living.

Amanda does not wait for news to happen. She creates it. Like she did when she got Phil Hellmuth to shotgun his own beer in front of the camera a few months ago. That video, copyrighted or not, is still circulating on the Internet. There is a very special reason that she can get her friends to oblige. As Michele Lewis pointed out “…she [Amanda] has a way of making one feel as though they already know her or … they really want to get to know her (and I don’t mean sexually).”

The real proof that Amanda is news came when she was featured on the cover of the newspaper Slots Today. She was pitted against Lacey Jones in what was called the battle of the blondes. There was such a hullabaloo over that incident with some people thinking that Slots Today was a glamour type gaming magazine and others claiming that it was Sluts Today. Amanda took both in the right spirit but she is hot enough to be on the cover of a glamour magazine. Those who do not believe this can check out the picture of her in a bikini on her MySpace page. Amanda does get a lot of mileage through her MySpace page along with date offers. She laughs it off saying, “If I wasn’t getting them, something would probably be wrong.” But she is already in a relationship and in any event she would never hook up with a guy via the Internet.

Today the dividing line between newsmaker and news caster is becoming fuzzy with news casters like Amanda and Tiffany Michelle taking up plating and players like Michele Lewis taking up news casting.
