Brian Townsend Changes Tactics

Remember the bad boy of professional online poker, Brian Townsend? This young player performed more faux-pas in his short career that most pros could even imagine, including multi accounting at top online poker sites time and time again.

After the first and even the second time, Townsend was forgiven for his antics as industry experts urged the sites to give him a second chance following tear jerking apologies on his part.

But at some point, nobody believed the young Townsend anymore and he eventually lost his Full Tilt Poker red pro status, and was also kicked out of the Poker Stars site and tournaments.

Townsend then decided to focus all his attention on PLO gaming, to the point that he claims on his website that he has won $2.5 million from PLO games in less than a year. According to Townsend, he is “playing as well as anyone in PLO right now.”

So if he’s doing as well as he says, why is Townsend upping and leaving this successful source of income and changing tactics?

Not only is the player shifting from high stake games, but he has announced on his blog that he has also decided to depart from PLO and concentrate instead on mixed games.

“Because of my desire to learn these mixed games I have withdrawn everything and have begun grinding the 20/40 and 40/80 games which in terms of big bet poker is playing 5/10 or 10/20 blinds,” wrote Townsend. “One of my friends asked me why I don’t learn the mixed games on the side while playing PLO when good games where running. I replied that I felt like I couldn’t play my best at the mixed games while playing so much larger at PLO. So I left myself 50k and want to grow this into enough to play the 1k/2k and 2k/4k mixed games.”

In other words, Townsend is saying that he has dropped his bankroll to the lowest he can in a bid to increase it by focusing on mixed games only.

One thing that nobody can deny is that Townsend is a gifted and quite brilliant poker player, and there is no doubt that if he puts his mind to it, he could become an excellent mixed game player over time.
