Casino Dealers in Ohio Ready

For the thousands of Ohioans who found themselves out of work due to the recession, the news that the state gave the green light to legalize casinos was welcoming. While many are still struggling to find jobs in their own fields, some are willing to retrain to work in casinos as poker dealers when they open up in 2012.

Ohio voters approved an amendment of the state constitution to allow casinos to be built in specific areas across the state, including Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo and Columbus, in what became known as Issue 3.

At present there are no poker schools in Ohio to train staff to deal poker cards and shuffle decks, but across the border in Michigan, a number of training schools are up and running, ready to teach potential poker dealers exactly what they are expected to know when they finally take their place behind the table.

The ABC School of Bartending and Casino College, for example, trains potential dealers in a number of fields, including how to count poker chips, how to deal cards and other skills. Blackjack dealing is also covered.

The dealers go through around 300 hours of training to receive their certification at a cost of $1000. Over the past few years over 200 Ohioans have passed through this college’s doors.

It is estimated that about 7,500 new jobs will be created by the opening of the new casinos in Ohio in two years time, and while dealership certification is not a pre-requirement for the job, it is safe to say that casino management would prefer staff who have an idea of what they are doing.

“Who wouldn’t want this job?” said Lee Chau, a teacher in the Michigan poker school. “You get 20 minute breaks every hour, you get to eat good food for free and work with people… All you need is the knowledge and know-how of the game.”

“The only bad thing is that you gain 40 pounds from all the standing and eating you do,” he quipped.
