Doyle Brunson Shares Love Tips

With Valentine’s Day weekend upon us, we felt it only appropriate to share what top poker pros have to say about love and relationships. There are some players who we probably won’t get round to asking, such as Phil Ivey who announced a divorce from his childhood sweetheart late last year. But Doyle Brunson, who has been married to his wife Louise since 1962, may be able to impart a few words of wisdom.
The couple appeared this week in the Wall Street Journal to give their angle on the secret of lasting relationships, and it is clear that their bond goes beyond the ordinary.
The Brunson’s for example, pooh-pooh the old belief that good couples shouldn’t keep secrets from each other. Doyle happily admits that he has kept quiet from his spouse some of the most frightening poker losses – and triumphant victories – of his career. “I have won and lost millions of dollars without her knowing,” he said.
Louise Brunson, showing that she’s quite the match for the Godfather of Poker, quipped back that that was ok with her. “I have my own bank account,” she said.
Louise also added a sentimental element to the discussion and said: “Love is the most important thing,” she said. “You have to love your spouse more than life itself.”
The Brunsons have certainly had their fair share of trials and tribulations and the fact that they still managed to stay together and come out the other end of bad experiences all the more stronger, is a testament to the strength of their relationship.
Louise has suffered through what was first though to be a form on incurable cancer and then which miraculously disappeared after the birth of their first child. Their daughter Doyla, who suffered from scoliosis during her life, died at the age of 18 due to a heart condition.
The Brunsons were also involved in an armed robbery in their home, where they were both tied up and left shocked and frightened.
Brunson chronicles his spectacular poker career that spans over fifty years in his new book: The Godfather of Poker.
