Flack Cops Out About DUI
Written by Renee K | Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
The latest story of Layne Flack driving under influence is one of “to believe or not to believe”. To start at the beginning, Flack did not show up for his first round match in the National Head-Up Poker Championship, which is being sponsored by Go Daddy. Producer Mori Eskandani gave out the information that Flack had been involved in a road accident the previous night while returning from the bracket drawing party of the tournament and hence could not come. He was replaced by David Oppenheim.
Later the news filtered in that actually Flack was arrested for driving under influence. The arrest report is available on several poker forums on the Internet. Three charges have been made. They are driving under the influence of liquor, driving at 21MPH or more over the speed limit and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. The case number has been registered as C0747200.
Flack, through his representative, has not denied the arrest but has claimed that he was not under the influence of liquor and that there was no emergency vehicle around. The complete statement reads:
“I was pulled over for speeding and refused a breathalyzer test as I have been instructed to do. I have no idea why I was written a ticket for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. There were no emergency vehicles around, besides the police car. A test, given by the Las Vegas PD, later revealed that I had a blood alcohol content of zero. … I was held for the mandatory 6 hours and released. I always go out of my way to not drink and drive. I regret that I was not able to play in NBC Heads Up and hope to be invited next year to play in this prestigious event.”
There are several things fishy about Flack’s response. Flack is recovering from substance abuse. Yet he was seen drunk last week. Hence it is difficult to believe that he was thrown in jail for simply speeding. Flack said that he has been instructed to refuse a breath analyzer test but does not say by whom or why. However the biggest damage to Flack’s response has come from a post by Andrew Robl in his blog. The post has since been removed but many have seen it and a copy has been put up at the Wicked Chops Poker web site. It reads:
“Lastly, I was admittedly quite drunk and somehow convinced the legendary Layne Flack to take shots of tequila with me. … We ended up getting quite drunk and I went home to get some sleep while his night continued. This afternoon, I was alerted to a 2+2 gossip post that revealed that Flack was arrested for a DUI and had to forfeit his tournament entry. I feel pretty guilty about it.”
Meanwhile the National Head-Up Poker Championship is heading towards culmination. Huck Seed has defeated Flack’s replacement and entered the semi finals. Go Daddy girl, Vanessa Rousso, has also entered the semi finals after defeated three mighty legends – Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu.
