Florida Poker Continues to Grow

Since changes in Florida’s legislation took place, the game of poker has been on the up and up with regards to growth in the state. Now, it has emerged that two pari-mutuel permit holders have been approved to go through to the next step in a process that may eventually lead to them opening second poker rooms.
The two permit holders – the Daytona Beach Kennel Club and the Palm Beach Kennel Club in West Palm Beach – received approval from the state’s Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering to convert their dormant jai-lai permits into greyhound permits. This process was enabled by the new laws governing poker that came into effect at the beginning of July this year.
Once these permits are converted, the two holders will then be able to begin the process of opening stand alone poker rooms in their counties. The greyhound races will be run at their original locations, thus ensuring that the clubs adhere to the laws.
Obtaining these permits does not mean that the clubs will be able to automatically open second, standalone poker rooms. City councils also need to give their approval, and this is not always a given. The DeBary City Council, for example, has passed a law banning poker, which means that any club seeking to open a poker room in the city will have a major legal battle on its hands.
In other Florida poker related news, players from the state received a (kind of) compliment from professional Mike “The Mouth” Matusow, who recently won the $1K Main Event at the DeepStacks University poker seminar.
“Earlier I said ‘Florida poker players were horrible’, but I was obviously joking about that statement,” he told Ante UP magazine. “I think overall there are a lot of very good players and then there are a lot that are really, really bad. But the same goes for any place you play.”
