Hope for Atlantic City as Gomes Buys Iconic Casino

Gambling tycoon, Dennis Gomes, has given a boost of confidence to the struggling Atlantic City gaming industry by announcing plans to purchase Resorts Atlantic City.
This iconic casino was the very first to open in Atlantic City in 1978 and holds a special spot in the hearts of many gamblers who frequent the area. In 2009, Resorts Atlantic City was taken over by lenders after the owners could not manage to keep up with mortgage payments.
Since December last year, the casino has been under threat of closure, just one of many gambling establishments struggling to remain above water due to the recession and declining numbers of gamblers who visited casinos in the past few years. The introduction of gambling options in neighboring states also affected the numbers.
The purchase of Resorts Atlantic City by Gomes’ company, Gomes Gaming could be the turning point that Atlantic City needs to see in order to start getting itself back on its feet. Gomes refused to disclose the terms of the sale just yet.
The Chairwoman of the Casino Control Commission in Atlantic City said that the purchase could revitalize the resorts, and provide employment opportunities for the rest of the city. “Mr. Gomes is a proven operator with a great deal of experience here in Atlantic City,” said Linda M. Kassekert. “This deal will preserve those jobs and hopefully create even more employment as the property improves.”
The purchase of the resort is subject to the approval of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission.
Dennis Gomes is a prominent figure in the world of US gambling. He first worked in law enforcement with the Nevada Gaming Control Board, before serving as chief of special investigations for the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement.
