June 29th California Online Poker Hearing

Online gambling – albeit on an intrastate level – is closer than ever to California poker players, following an announcement that a date has been set to hear the case for the introduction of intrastate poke legislation in the state.
It was announced this week that the Senate Governmental Organization Committee has scheduled this coming Tuesday (June 29th) as the hearing date.
It has been noted that the committee will convene at 1.30 and will chaired by Senator Rod Wright (Inglewood). Thereafter, Senate Bill 1484 will be heard in Room 3191 at 3.30 pm.
The online poker legislation has been given what is known as special order of business status, meaning that the hearing time has to be set for 3.30 pm. This gives it a head start in front of other pending measures – 20 in all – that are to be heard on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Monday saw the Tribal Alliance of Sovereign Indian Nations (TASIN) oppose Sen. Wright’s measure to legalize online poker and gambling in the state.
The group said that the bill was so broad that even the tribe that has been backing the bill until now, the Marongo Band of Mission Indians, has opposed it in its present form.
The Marongos have signed a letter written by TASIN, which is seen a step back in the bill’s changes of turning into legislation.
“We’ve always supported the concept of intrastate poker in California because of consumer protections, revenue to the state and the fact it would bring the game out of the shadows,” said a spokesperson for the Marongo. “But we cannot support the bill in its present form.”
Bill 1484 will essentially provide Californians with an online poker and gambling platform, run on three hubs and open only to state residents. Offshore companies will be forbidden from competing with the locally based online poker companies.
