Poker professionals are no less of celebrities than Hollywood stars or pop singers. Their fans are no longer content at being informed of how they have performed at the tables. They want to get into the skins of their favorites and learn about all the itsy bitsy details of their non-poker life. So poker journalism has veered from the straight and narrow about hands and pots and bad beats and bracelets to what poker pros are eating and wearing and where they have been seen and with whom.
Michele Lewis took this kind of reporting to new heights with her “Girl on Girl” interviews done through WSOP 2008. Michele probed into the personal lives of the hottest female poker pros in a manner no male would dare and laid bare these personal lives with a sensitivity that only a female can exhibit. The women that Michele covered, or should one say uncovered, for Wicked Chops Poker were Gloria Balding, Maria Ho, Liz Lieu, Jennifer “Jennicide” Leigh, Amanda Leatherman and Tiffany Micelle. So good were her interviews that Bluff Magazine has asked her to continue with the good work. She has started with Erica Schoenberg for the December issue.
As the year winds up it is the right time to rewind to some of the gems from Michele’s Girl on Girl series and draw up a list of whom she should interview in the coming year. Gloria Balding was dating Justin Bonomo, likes nerdy guys and has been photographed with Tiffany Michelle in a hot tub. Maria Ho’s guy would have to be loyal and honest and have a sense of humor. He should be able to hold his own in a conversation, should not be afraid to disagree with Maria (but not too much) and should be physically attractive. And perhaps because all this is too much to ask for in one man, Maria is getting really close to Tiffany Michelle. Jennifer Leigh spoke about her shoot for Playboy saying that “There’s never a better way to go than… go naked…”. Jennifer would love to design lingerie for men, though it would not be just lingerie. Amanda Leatherman too waxed eloquent on the qualities of her guy. She likes a really good smile and great teeth. She is attracted to confident men, maybe even a little cocky but not too much. She loves tattoos that are in the right places and mean something. She hates sleeping alone after watching scary movies. Tiffany Michelle’s interview was the best. She said, “I think it’s kind of like cheating to use the advantage of bringing the boobs out at the table. I want to be respected because I’m kicking ass.” And she confirmed that she was friends with all the hot chicks of poker.
Michele’s Girl on Girl was witty and saucy and yet penetrative and profound and was by far the best piece of poker journalism in 2008. So who is left for Michele to interview? Quite a few names come to mind including Evelyn Ng, Clonie Gowen, Jennifer Harman, Vanessa Rousso, Christina Lindley and Lacy Jones.
