Mike Sexton Predicts US Poker Legislation in 2010
Written by Renee K | Sunday, March 7th, 2010
Mike Sexton, poker player extraordinaire who was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame late last year, made several predictions about the direction that poker legislation is heading this year. And if his predictions are anything to go by, we are going to see some huge changes on the poker landscape in 2010, according to his article in pokernewsdaily.com.
Most importantly, Sexton believes that online poker will finally come out what he calls the ‘grey area’, with legislation coming forth that will determine the future of the game on the internet in one direction or another. Sexton said that if nothing dramatic happens on the federal level, we will definitely see a number of states, such as California, moving in the direction of legalizing and regulation online poker on a state level.
Sexton also believes that this will be the year that we finally see the back of the controversial Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Hopefully, this will be accomplished by the acceptance of Rep. Barney Frank’s alternative laws that will make online poker playing and gambling legal on a federal level.
Looking outside the boundaries of the United States, Sexton predicted that more countries around the globe will regulate online poker the way France and Italy are doing. This essentially means that poker players will be able to play the game within their own markets and Sexton believes that this is the model that the United States will eventually follow.
On a commercial level, Sexton predicts that poker championships will continue to thrive, thanks to the role that TV will play in their promotions. He also said that more money than ever will be raised for charity through poker events and he urged casinos to do more to support charity events.
Sexton, a professional poker player and WSOP bracelet winner, is best known for his promotion of the game as the main host of the World Poker Tour and a spokesman for Party Poker.
