My One Goal

Written by Roger S | Sunday, November 8th, 2009

I dont really set goals as I’ve always seen them as limits.  Instead I’ve always just tried my hardest at what I want to accomplish and if it works, it works.  If not, well then it wasn’t meant to be.  There’s not much I really want to accomplish right now, but instead things I want to do personally and that is as follows.

For the past 2 years there has been something I’ve really been wanting to do, and it’s the only thing I don’t do that kind of gets me down and that’s traveling.  All my affiliate managers know by now that I don’t go to conferences because I get very uncomfortable away from home yet I still get asked if I’m going every time conference time rolls around and I run out of excuses.

It’s not a fear of flying, its more a fear of not being the one in control.  If the plane crashes and burns, big deal, but if I have to sit on a runway for 2 hours trapped on a little plane with a bunch of people, FUCK THAT!

Last year was the first time I had flown in 7 years and it was the trip to the Poker Stars Affiliate thing in the Bahamas.  Living in Florida, the Bahamas is literally a hop and a skip away.  Plus we flew private because of Chipleader promo credits we had won so total travel time was about an hour and a half, from home to hotel!

There are so many places I want to go, and I think I just have to do it to get over the uncomfortableness.  Flying private is something I might do for 2 or 3 domestic flights then I’ll just try flying first class on the normal planes. Flying private costs about $25,000 domestic so its not terribly bad if you don’t fly a lot.

A couple places I have in mind are Puerto Rico at the end of the month.  That’s a good starter flight as I can use the private jet credits to go there with all our surfboards and just leave the boards there or what not depending if I stay for longer than a week, month, few months, who knows…

Some other places that seem really cool are Las Vegas (never fucking been and I’m in the gambling business), Colorado, Montana, California, Spain, and Russia or any far east country like that.  Also to hit up 1 or 2 gaming conferences would be cool.  For shits sake though, sure would be nice if they didn’t hold them all in Europe.

Most people have the, “make money, lose weight, build a sucessful business, stop smoking, buy a bunch of useless shit,” but for me it’s just being happy chilling on the beach somewhere surfing, golfing or sleeping, plane and simple.  I think it was a Pappa Roach song that said, “The things you own, own you.”  Oh so very true.  Money is not a means to buy loads of crap, but instead a means to be free from working…at least that’s how I see it.  But to me, the one thing that is missing is traveling.

On a side note, the Blue Angels have been practicing their flight patterns over my house all week for the air show they have on the beach pier next to my house.  Not conducive to getting much sleep mid day when all you hear is shewooooooooooooo.  God damn those fuckers are loud, and they practice so low it sounds like World War III outside.

I want to say thanks to Google for shitting all over my sites these past couple months.  Fucking A it sure would be nice to rank well for a good term again…I guess this is partly my doing though. It sometimes feels like everything I touch turns to a pile of heaping dung lately.

Roger – if there is one thing you should 100% do is travel as much as you can, it’s one of the best things I think any person can do. You should do different regions, i.e. Europe, Asia, etc and do like 1-2 month trips and just see where you end up. Another place that is awesome is Argentina, Graham and I went there for 3 months last year just to chill and work from our laptops, it was awesome. If you need any travel advice, you know my email lol. Good luck with everything! John.

The best thing I ever did in my entire life dude, is be a ski bum in Colorado and Lake Tahoe for a few years.

I didn’t work then either, but I busted ass all summer long on my flooring business to be able to take every winter off since I was 19.

Just fuckin do it man, take a laptop with you and go surf Costa Rica for a month.

That’s why I like reading affiliate blogs. Don’t really bother with the affiliate posts just like to hear about trips and stuff, those I find most interesting. Probably why I only watch the discovery / travel channel these days. I live vicariously through everyone else. :) From reading Graham’s posts seems like you guys do a bunch of traveling, same with Nat. How come you dont go to any conferences Mike?

  4. MJ Says:

Man honestly, I’m the exact same as you. I’ve been freaked out about flying for a few years now and for mostly the same reasons, for the exact same reason I prefer to be the driver than the guy riding I need to be in control.

Anyways, flying 15 hours over an ocean has me freaked out. I’ve done next to zero overseas travel but I’ve covered the US back and forth which is why I’ve spent a lot of time near the US ocean in both Cali and Florida lol.

But that said, I too need to suck it the fuck up and just go. I keep hoping they’ll have a conference in Mexico so I don’t have to fly over an ocean lol.

I so get the control thing….and Canada’s a pretty cool country. You could pick up boarding here if you can handle the -20C weather :)

Good luck with the trips and sorry to hear about G

Yeah traveling is one of my favorite things to do…especially being in cold weather here a lot in Canada. I just got back from Vegas last night and it was unreal, really suggest checking it out man.

i see california is on your to do list…hmmm, so maybe you will actually make it out here to see me i’ll hold my breath…ready, go!

    Hey Roger,

Definitely second what John said… travelling is sooo much fun. I think you learn way more from visiting new places and experiencing new things than you ever can from reading a book or watching a movie. I seem to pretty much live from trip to trip now, and can’t wait for the next one (Trinidad in January then possibly back to Argentina). Costa Rica sounds like a lot of fun, and Vegas is a must (at least once). Spain, I definitely reccomend the islands (Mallorca / Ibiza are AMAZING). I also really want to go to Russia one day, its on the list of places to see.

Oh ya, I also had the Blue Angels in my city back in the summer. It was amazing to see them so close. One day they all flew pretty close to the window of my house.

If you ever need some suggestions for travel or have any questions about the places I have been just hit me up on MSN.

I hear Spain and France have pretty good waves too :)

Costa Rica is actually one place I’ve been to a few times. It was pretty cool if you stayed away from the big cities or the tourist traps. But, it’s a 3rd world country so it can be pretty gross (see Johns blog, lol). The waves are good though. Other than for the waves, I’d never go there again.

  10. Mike Says:

Yeah, Costa Rica was not what I was expecting. +1 to never going back except for surfing.

  11. MJ Says:

What is it you like about Puerto Rico? I never really had it on my hit list but I guess it’s easy to get to. You ever consider Hawaii?

Maybe your FL ass should go learn how to ride down a mountain this winter in Lake Tahoe. I’m sure a few of us could even meet up if it worked out.

  12. SarahSmile Says:

i second lake tahoe, it’s a close enough drive that i can bring some of my girls & drive out for a weekend. let’s make this happen! :)

Man I don’t feel so bad for never going to Vegas now. I am planning on goign there for the WSOP in 2010, but man I dread flying again. I’ve worked in the corporate world for the last 12 years and the last few years I’ve flat out told them all I’m not flying again, ever!.

The big draw back for me is not seeing places I want to see, Italy, London, etc. I feel like such a tool when I get Stars invites or Conference invites to these events all paid for, and I make an excuse to stay home. So lame of me.

Now that I think about it, I’ve met members of my forum in Tunica, but I’ve never actually met another poker affiliate. I need to get out more.

OH and I can relate to new sites being hated on. For some reason thin mini sites are doing better for me that bigger new projects. Cutts keeps mentioning over optimizing recently and I keep wondering if that is a cause. Can be discouraging though, especially when you have good content, everything is in order and you get -50′d

  15. RogerCP Says:

If you got a Stars invitation, you gotta go! It was sick last year. You only have to spend about 10 minutes actually thinking about work all week. :) And everything is planned out and comped all week long.
