My Pet Peve: Bad Tipper at PokerRoom

My Pet Peve: Bad Tipper at PokerRoomGrowing up working in the tipping industry I’ve come to have a pet peve for bad tippers. It always seems like the wealthier some people are, the worse they are at tipping (definitely not all cases).

Anyways last night I felt like really giving it to this guy who refused to tip the dealers at the Pokerroom in Jax beach.

Ok before going out to the clubs we went to the Jax PokerRoom for some monstrous $2/2 no limit holdem.  I know, big money.  :P .  They do have $5/10 no limit but it’s the most absurd game you can play, considering you’re only allowed to buy-in with $100.

So there was this real creepy guy there, maybe in his mid 20’s the same age as me and he was up pretty big for the table.  He was about 15 buyin’s up ($1500) and he would NOT tip the dealers shit.  The dealers here rotate every 30 minutes and he’d give them a few bucks sometimes when they left, but he usually made sure he forgot.

Jacksonville pokerBeing my pet peve, I had to call the guy out on it.  He won about 3 buy-ins straight off the bat from me and didn’t tip once.  I had enough.  Nothing bothers me at the table usually but this creep really bothered me so I said, “With all the hands you’re winning, you’re going to be a cheap ass and not even tip the dealers.”  He did his little creepy slouch in his chair as he collected his chips and said,  “I tip at the end of the night”…. a total cop out.

Well after I said that the dealer looked up and gave a rye smile, he knew the guy was a dousche.  The guy must be a regular because you could tell the dealers wanted him to lose any sizeable hand he was in.

So after the first dealer left, he doesn’t tip and I go, “So much for tipping the dealers when they leave.”  He said, oh I forgot this time….and I said well he’s standing only a few feet away from you it’s not like you can’t still tip him.  After thinking a few minutes he got up and tipped the dealer a couple white dollar chips, pathetic!

Only a few years ago I was in the same position, working off tips and there is nothing that will make you look worse in the eyes of the person working than not tipping.  Even if you’re broke give the guy/girl at least a buck, they understand.  Stiffing someone is like slapping them in the face.

I swear this post was written by me…I HATE that. I have played at casinos where people would win $5K+ pots and asked the dealer to chop a $1 chip into a 50 cent piece to tip the dealer 50 cents!!!

Are you serious? wtf is the matter with you….I cannot stand those people.

    perfect post.

Yeah, it’s pretty bad huh. It seems like the higher stakes you go the worse the tipping gets too. Even at the pokerstars tournament this year people were awful at tipping. Nobody was even tipping the dealers at the $5/10 or above table but at the $1/2 everybody was hooking the dealer up. (Probably because everyone was drunk. :)

I’m not experienced at playing live because I live in Florida but if I were a dealer it seems like the lower stakes would be the best.

    thanks for the comment.

I agree that people sould be tipped well for good service. But there seems to be a since of entitlement for a tip because someone does their jobs. Some even say a small tip for poor service is a must. People sould be allowed to tip as the feel or at least 15% to 20% of a bill as service would dictate.

I would hate to think that I was a poor tipper, as noone wants to be precieved as a tightass. But to call someone out in front of others as a tightass is just as bad and shows a lack of tolerance for others and that is another issue altogether. Here’s a tip too think about.

Some people can’t afford a normal size tip.(15 to 18%) for dining as an example

Some people have never been tought what a correct amount should be for a tip.

Some people don’t deserve a normal size tip.

Some stituations don’t require a tip

Some tips are calculated into the bill

    Just a thought.

    Sincerely

Cable guy who likes to get tips too.

there is nothing worse than people like that, but i got another situation that drives me crazy. $500 and above tournys, more than once iv’e been at final tables were the table payout would be anywere from 50k to 600k and as the people drop from the table 10,9,8,etc,and none of them come back after getting there money, when at times there grabbing 5,8,12,20,50k,and nothing for the floor or the dealers.and to top it off they very grateful if you drop $250 on them after you walked away with 25k!
