New Jersey State Senator Raymond Lesniak has been praised by poker proponents for introducing S3167, a bill that has the potential to legalize online poker, as well as other casino games such as roulette, blackjack and slots.
The possibility of a legalized online poker industry in New Jersey is closer than ever if the act is signed into law by future Governor Chris Christie. The bill proposes that all servers and monitoring offices will have to be located in Atlantic County, New Jersey, with accounts only open to players who are at least 21 years old. US online casinos would be a goldmine for the money strapped state.
According to the law, a special government gambling division will develop “technical standards for approval of software, computers and other gaming equipment used to conduct internet wagering, including mechanical, electrical or program reliability, security against tampering, the comprehensibility of wagering, and noise and light levels, as it may deem necessary to protect the player from fraud or deception and to insure the integrity of gaming.”
There has been praise across the board for Senators Lesniak’s efforts. The Chairman of the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association, Joe Brennan said in a special press release: “We’re happy that New Jersey has taken this issue into their own hands. New Jersey is recognized as having the toughest gaming regulators in the U.S., but as a leading gaming state with a long track record of doing things the right way, internet gambling will have a great home here and the opportunity to begin normalizing the industry.”
The bill specially mentions the game of poker several times to ensure that there is no question of its inclusion in any future act.
Lesniak’s bill has accommodated a tax regime of 20% for all internet poker and gambling operations that will need to be paid to the New Jersey casino revenue fund. Other taxes will also be payable to the New Jersey Racing Commission to benefit horse racing.
