New Statistics Show Importance of Poker to US Casinos

New preliminary statistics released by the American Gaming Association showcase why the introduction of poker and other table games are so important for the continuation of these establishments’ profitability and success.
The study shows that gaming revenues dropped 5.7% across 12 states where gambling is authorized, mainly due to the recession and the increase in the popularity of US online casinos. If US casinos expect to see their revenues rise, they will need to introduce new products that appeal to gamblers, such as poker and table games.
Another market research group, Mintel, showed in a study that while 35% of adults visited a casino in the past year in 2001, the more current number was 30%. This indicated a 14% decline over less than a decade.
“This shift has been gradual,” said a spokesperson for Mintel, “which suggests that this is not a result of the recession.”
He also added that “casinos may be losing audience to the increasingly compelling entertainment offerings in the home; such as HDTV (high definition TV), high-end video game systems and the Internet, including Internet gambling.” This means that in order to compete, the introduction of poker where it is not yet offered is absolutely imperative.
While twelve states in the US authorize gambling, at least 25 have proposed the expansion of their gambling operations. Some skeptics have said that the expansion of gambling may not bring more customers into the market as there are “only so many customers, so with every new casino there are only marginal increases.”
Nevertheless, logic determines that if US casinos have more to offer their players and can compete with neighboring states, the chances are that they will attract more customers and increase their revenues. An increase in these revenues also in brings in extra income for the states that goes towards expenses such as healthcare, education and so forth.
