New WSOP Rules Protect WSOP Poker Site?

To tweet or not to tweet? That was one of the questions addressed by the latest rules that were issued by the 2010 poker tournament, released this week. While the majority of rules remained the same, Harrah’s officials felt the need to address issues relating to the latest technology, including Twitter and cell phone use.
According to the rules, players can only use Twitter if they are not, to quote Harrah’s, “involved in a hand (cards in muck).” However, texting or email will not be allowed to be made to other players at the poker table. Anybody who violates these rules may be disqualified from the tournament.
With regards to cell phones, the rules are very clear. “All cell phones and other voice-enabled and ‘ringing’ electronic devices must be turned off during tournament play.”
Harrah’s said that specific approved devices, such as mp2 players, iPods and headsets to reduce surrounding noise may be used by players.
Other rules referred to logos that players are not allowed to wear as part of their gear. These include the usual “unethical” logos, as well as those that promote things such as drugs, guns, crude language and pornography.
As usual, professional poker players who are representing online gambling sites that conduct business with US players (such as Full Tilt), will not be allowed to wear gear that directly promotes these sites, as a result of regulations set in place by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act unless .net is used. The .net now has to be the same size of the words, such as Full Tilt Poker. Before the .net was tiny.
However, as in previous years, pros have gotten around this problem by promoting educational sites linked to the poker sites (such as FullTiltPoker.net). This is more likely to be related to the WSOP online poker site launched to only UK players earlier this year.
It seems incredible that the World Series of Poker is once again just around the corner, and this year it is scheduled to kick off in May, with qualifiers beginning in April, 2010.
Last year, organizers inflicted 186 penalties on players who did not follow the rules of the tournament, which involved anything from dealer abuse to improper cell phone usage.
