Party Poker Reaches for the Sky

If you thought you’ve seen all the poker promotion gimmicks, think again. Party Poker has decided to take the standard up a notch – literally – with its announcement that it will host a poker tournament held 150 feet in the air!

Party Poker will partner with Ace Magazine to host Poker in the Sky to be held in Copenhagen next week, and the event is sure to draw lots of curious onlookers.

The format of the actual tournament has not yet been released, nor the poker players who are due to take part in it, but if Party Poker is behind the event, September 11th is definitely a date worth diarizing.

Twenty Poker Party satellite qualifiers and two celebrity players will make up the swinging team.

“Poker is a high octane game and we want to give the Danish poker players a special experience that will really boost their adrenaline levels,” said a spokesperson for Party Poker. “We have an expectation that it will be the most spectacular poker event Copenhagen has ever seen

What we do know for now is that Poker in the Sky will attract 22 professional poker players who will find themselves on a platform hoisted by a crane 150 feet above Copenhagen’s town hall to play it out until a winner is declared. It is believed that the event will last around four hours.

There are some things we hope the organizers of Poker in the Sky have given some thought, such as how those who have been eliminated or those who quit the competition will get down, or are they expected to swing up there with the other players for the full four hours?!

But there is a definite incentive for those who already make it up there to stay – the winner of the Poker in the Sky will win a place in the upcoming World Open V which takes place next month in the United Kingdom. The London event will be broadcast on the Five network, and viewers will be able to enjoy Phil Laak, Tom Dwan and Jennifer Tilly in action. The prize package includes airfare to London and luxury accommodation.

On a side note, it seems Party Poker has lost the race to become the provider of Harrahs WSOP Online Poker as they lost out to 888 this week as Dragonfish, part of 888 took over.
