Pennsylvania Casinos See Revenues Soar with New Poker Games

It was obvious that Pennsylvania casinos would enjoy a boost in revenues after they introduced table games this summer, but the results posted recently show numbers that go beyond expectations. Local casinos took in $17.5 million in revenue from games such as poker, blackjack and other table games that were introduced in July, following changes in state gambling legislation.

These figures are applicable to only parts of July as the games were introduced between July 8th and 18th, 2010. Analysts are thrilled with the results, and some have predicted that Pennsylvania’s table games could snowball into a $400 million industry.

While Penn casinos are naturally thrilled with the numbers, across the state line, Atlantic City casinos are looking on in envy. The introduction of poker and other table games in Pennsylvania is seen as a direct threat to Atlantic City’s table game industry that is worth an estimated $1.2 billion.

The eleven casino resorts in Atlantic City share 1,600 table games between them, compared to the 620 currently found in Pennsylvania casinos. “I think we’re going to see tremendous growth in these numbers, as we did with the Pennsylvania slots over the past several years,” noted on analyst. “I can see it is going to surpass $300 million and possibly $400 million for the Pennsylvania operators.”

The CE of the Mohegan Sun in Pennsylvania, Bobby Soper said: “There’s really no reason to make that long trek to Atlantic City now that we have all of the amenities and table games.”

The introduction of poker and table games has also had a positive effect on other areas. “In the wake of the introduction of table games, Mount Airy Casino Resort has also witnessed an incremental increase in slot, food and beverage, and hotel revenues,” said an executive for the resort, John Culetsu.
