Written by RogerCP | Wednesday, December 30th, 2009
One of the poker world’s most high profile personalities, Phil Ivey will be divorcing his wife of seven years, Luciatetta. It has been reported in various media outlets that Ivey and his wife filed for joint divorce in a Nevada court several days before Christmas. No comment from the player was forthcoming.
According to reports, the divorce was filed on December 22nd with both parties present. The court approved the request.
Phil Ivey is one of the most private players on the poker circuit and has kept his personal life jealously guarded until now. He has been dubbed ‘The Tiger Woods of Poker’, which is why the news of his divorce comes as such a shock so close to the true Tiger Woods saga.
What is known about the Ivey couple is that they were school sweethearts who married in 2002. The two have rarely been photographed together in public, although the most popular one doing the rounds one is of the couple at a Lakers basketball game – a team that is worshipped by Ivey.
Ivey-watchers are wondering whether they will get to see the poker star’s true net worth if details of a settlement are made public. However, industry experts agree that the couple will probably reach an out of court settlement.
According to official statistics, Phil Ivey has won around $12 million through tournament winnings. However, it is generally agreed that the amount is much higher than that through online tournaments and proposition bets.
2009 was a superb year for Phil Ivey, career wise. The player made it to the World Series of Poker Main Event final table and won two WSOP bracelets. He also made a quiet killing at Full Tilt Poker by playing high stakes games at online tournaments.
While some poker sites are celebrating the new poker bachelor in town, others are mourning the loss of a marriage which may have been doomed from the start following Ivey’s incredible rise to fame and his constant presence in the limelight from the first year of the couple’s marriage. Let’s hope that 2010 brings better news for the poker celebs out there.
