Philadelphia Editorial Calls Gambling a “Losing Economic Bet”

The Philadelphia Enquirer ran an editorial this weekend which essentially called for states to move away from the thinking that legalizing gambling would fix all their economic woes. Calling gambling a “losing economic bet”, the piece claims that state authorities try to “dress up” gambling.
“Many of gambling’s associated problems have been wallpapered over for years in Atlantic City because the resort town basically enjoyed a monopoly. But new competition – mainly from Pennsylvania, as well as New York, Connecticut, and other states – is eating Atlantic City’s lunch. The recession has also chased away gamblers and tourists.”
The editorial actually agrees with New Jersey Governor Christie’s plans to take control of Atlantic City’s gaming district, claiming that “for too long, it has been allowed to languish”. The piece also agrees with Christie’s claim that “Atlantic City is dying”, however goes on to say: “that blunt assessment should be a harbinger for other cities and states that bet on gambling as an economic engine.”
The article’s author believes that competition for gamblers is what is killing Atlantic City and that competition will only grow.
“Just making the streets bordering casinos safer and cleaner isn’t a game-changer. The casinos in Pennsylvania will still be easier to get to for many of Atlantic City’s former customers,” it reads.
“Christie should aim higher than just trying to replicate Vegas’ bright lights, sex, and sleaze. Given the increased local competition, Atlantic City should instead capitalize on its main competitive advantage: It’s on the ocean. Instead of Vegas East, Christie should aim to make Atlantic City an Orlando North, with Disney-style parks. Or a New Orleans, with its music theme. The goal should be to broaden the appeal of the resort beyond gambling, with more attractions that lure families and conventions.”
Our question is: Why can’t Christie aim on both? Improve the gambling facilities in Atlantic City, all the while taking advantage of its great sea location and adding family oriented entertainment as well, including theme parks.
