The Indian population has always been known to enjoy card games and competitive sports, so it comes as no surprise that Indian players are usually extremely successful in poker tournaments held close to home.
Last year’s Asian Poker Classic was just one example of how well Indian poker players are doing in the industry today.
As such, many will be pleased to note that an India Poker Tour has been launched and is due to take place in Autumn of this year.
Mr. Imran Hassan, the Director of Oprations for the India Poker Tour, said: “Our goal is to add poker to the pastimes of the card and sport-crazed fans of India. India traditionally has had a long history of being a card-loving nation. So we hope the launch of the India Poker Tour (IPT) will now help to satisfy India’s craving for skill based card games.”
Players will battle it out for an expected prize pool of $1-million starting September 2008. The India Poker Tour will consist of four tournaments, each taking place in a different city in the world’s most populous country. The first event will kick off the tour in Mumbai in September, followed by a second tournament in Bangalore in October. Another October event will be held in Delhi, while the IPT’s grand finale will be held in November in Goa, a coastal city in India renowned for its beauty.
News of the launching of an Indian Poker Tour has already been met with much interest in India and around the world. It is expected that online poker rooms will offer qualifier tournaments as early as June, for players to guarantee themselves a seat in the event. Live satellites will also be an option for those who prefer it. Plans for a TV special and Indian poker school are also in the pipeline.
A special India Poker Tour website (www.indiapokertour.com) has been launched to help potential participants learn more information about the event. Here players will find the full schedule of the tour, data on how to enter, press information and contact information.
The site states that a different prize structure will be developed for each of the four individual tournaments during the tour, based on the legislation in each state relating to live card games. The entry requirements to the final event in Goa, for example, will differ from those in Mumbai, Bangalore and Goa.
