Poker Bill Proposed in Nebraska

Nebraska may be next on the list of US states attempting to make changes to their poker landscapes, in what many see as growing pressure on the Obama administration to make meaningful changes on a federal level. Among that we have the New Jersey, Florida, and Federal Poker Players Alliance Bill being attempted to be passed.

Associated Press reported that Nebraska State Senator Russ Karpisek of Wilbur introduced a proposed constitutional amendment that has the potential of making currently illegal cash poker games permissable and allowing them to be played in the open.

LR296CA was introduced to the Legislature this week (Tuesday), with the main objective of the proposed bill to legalize poker that is played for charity purposes.

At present, non profit groups and volunteer fire departments are allowed to run pickle-card games, and Senator Karpisek’s bill would make poker events legal for these groups.

The bill proposes that anything between half and 75% of the money generated at a charity poker event would be awarded to players in the form of winnings, while the rest would to go the group running the event, with the express purpose of the money finally seeing its way into the coffers of needy charities.

The next step in the Nebraska bill is to have lawmakers give it the thumbs up. If this happens, the proposal could go to state voters in November for final approval.

Russ Karpisek was elected in 2006 to represent the 32nd Nebraska legislative district. Prior to that, he served as the mayor of Wilbur, Nebrasa from 1994 until 2006.

An active website, called Nebraska Charity Poker, questions why poker is not legal in the state as a charity game. The site is calling on its readers and supporters to pressure their state senator and senators on the General Affairs Committee to let them know that they would like to see Senator Karpisek’s bill voted on by the people of Nebraska.

The site lists reasons why charity poker should be legalized in Nebraska, including being a good way to raise money for needy causes and to increase the revenue and exposure of existing companies who host these events.
