Poker Ducks Closed

Poker Ducks, a small online poker site that operated off the Boss Media network has suddenly, and without warning shut its doors. No formal announcement was made regarding the closure, nor were customers or Boss Media partners informed about the plans beforehand.

Online poker players who tried to access the site yesterday were met with a notice that read: “PokerDucks is closed. Please contact support@pokerducks.com.”

Poker Ducks’ only major claim to fame was that it was endorsed by the Swedish poker professional, Christer Johansson who won the 2009 Irish Open poker tournament. The poker site sponsored Johansson for this competition and was thus in the limelight during the days leading up to and following the finals.

Johansson has, in the past, won the World Poker Tour first Grand Prix de Paris event, winning €500,000 first prize in 2003. He also finished second in the European Poker Tour Barcelona Open in 2005.

While there may be a number of reasons why Poker Ducks closed without warning, many are speculating that the poker room’s own success could have led to its demise.

Boss Media recently introduced a system of fines for partner poker rooms that relied on their winning players for income and did not bring in enough new players. It has been speculated that Poker Ducks violated the terms of its contract and was therefore forced to close. These rumors remain unconfirmed by any authority in the industry, or by Boss Media.

Poker Ducks also featured in a press release in 2006 that was issued by Malta’s Lotteries and Gaming Authority, after it learned that the online poker site was claiming to be located in Malta.

“The Lotteries and Gaming Authority would like to bring to your attention that a foreign remote gaming company by the name of Poker Ducks is claiming that it is being located in Malta and therefore winnings for European Union citizens are tax-free,” read the press release.

“The Authority would like to inform the public at large that the above statement is not true. Pokerducks.com has no connection whatsoever with the Maltese jurisdiction.”
