Poker Goes Live in Pennsylvania

Western Pennsylvania casinos were given the green light yesterday to open their doors to poker players after a successful test run by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. The poker playing public in the state has been waiting for this day for quite some time now, and it goes without saying that the news was greeted with much satisfaction.

From now on, Penn casinos will be allowed to offer a range of card and table games that were not previously on offer, including craps, roulette and blackjack. However, the obvious draw card to these casinos is the game of poker, which is enjoying a surge in popularity all over the world – both online and off. Many of the online poker sites accepting US players and casinos for USA players are fearing these state run casinos will squeeze out the American online gaming funds.

Those players who are residents of Pittsburgh and wanted to play poker needed, in the past, to cross state lines in order to play. However, they are now able to play in two top casinos in their own city –namely the Rivers Casino and the Meadows Racetrack and Casino. Rivers will roll out 24 poker tables for the public, while Meadows will havea similar number.

Poker has not yet come to all the casinos in Pennsylvania, with the Gaming Board still testing the game out at other locations. It is believed that players in the south of Penn will be able to enjoy the games by July 18. Locations in this part of the state offering poker and other table games include Parx Casino (Bensalem) and Harrah’sChester (Delaware County). Another casino in southern Pennsylvania, the SugarHouse Casino will offer poker and table games in September when it completes construction plans. The casinos have paid a hefty fee for the right to offer poker on their floors. This year alone, the government generated $165 million in licensing fees alone, and it is expected to make nearly $100million more by the end of 2010.
