Poker Pro Richard Lee Goes to Jail

Written by Renee K | Sunday, September 3rd, 2006

Richard Lee (6th place finisher of WSOP) was arrested for running an illegal sports booking business in the state of Texas. Doesn’t sound like a big deal? Well it is because when they raided his house they found lists of “business partners” and clients.

On the supposed list were names of cops, lawyers, and other high powered officials. The guy was said to be running the biggest illegal sports betting operation in the state of Texas. Other homes were raided but Richard Lee’s was the mother load according to police.

A tip off might have been when Lee refused to take any endorsements for the main table of the World Series of Poker. Instead he wore his glasses, a sweatshirt and the only logo showing was that of his hometown, San Antonio .

I know that you can get up to 6 figures for wearing advertisements of poker rooms at smaller WSOP events. He must have passed up a hefty figure at the Main Event table.

Richard Lee just held a press conference talking about the situation.  He didn’t have much to say.  At one point he said “It’s out of my hands now”.  Lee seemed very docile for what he was up against.

He knew what he was doing was wrong.  During the conference he kept stating that he was so proud of his home state.  He talked about the WSOP and how he refused to take bribes from poker sites to wear their clothing.

The cops siezed most of his computers, tvs, and other stuff inside of his house.  Even his bank account was seized.  Yikes.  Talk about starting all over.
