Poker Twitters Blowing Up
Written by Matt W | Friday, March 27th, 2009
First it was the blog. Blogs are usually written once a day and several poker players, like Daniel Negreanu, write them regularly. Doyle Brunson’s blog at his poker room is quite popular. Others get around to writing them about once a month, probably when they get a prod from their sponsors. Liz Lieu and Lacey Jones fall into this class. And some have started blogging and then forgotten about it.
Next was the video blog. Reading text on a monitor was replaced by an audio visual experience. Maria Ho’s video blogs are worth watching, especially because they often include Tiffany Michelle.
Now is the Twitter. Tweets are short messages sent every few minutes to constantly update ones audience on what is happening in ones life at that time. Tweets can be transmitted from and to mobile phones or through the Internet.
One of the earliest poker professionals to get into Twittering is Phil Hellmuth. Who else can be egoistic enough to think the world would be interested in knowing every time he raised or folded. His profile on Twitters shows that over a 1,000 people have subscribed to his Tweets. A sample of his Tweets read as follows:
– Playing chinese poker with Mike the Mouth right now…online for 300 a point
– Up 23 Points quickly….
– I won 19 Points from the mouth last night and quit
Followers of Hellmuth’s Tweets will know that he played rock paper scissors with a female Olympian; he wrote his 211th column for United Media and Blake Shelton invited him to hang out at their concert. As Thomas Somach said next will be a Tweet on “Phil going to the bathroom and telling a breathlessly waiting world whether it was a “1” or a “2” he made?”
Many poker pros are reported to be on Twitters. The names include Annie Duke, Barry Greenstein, Maria Ho, Lacey Jones, Tiffany Michelle, Liz Lieu, Joe Sebok and David Williams. Lacey has over 800 followers. Her words of wisdom include:
– Day 10 on the Master Cleanse! Woo Hooo! Treating myself to a special beauty/ pampering day for all the torture I’m putting myself through.
– Steaming after a workout feels soo good.
– Hot stone massage and pedicure. I’m in heaven today…and still hungry.
– Maria has about 250 followers. A peep into Maria’s life reveals:
– So glad I looked both ways and saw that copper before I almost attempted that ridiculously illegal u-turn.
– @wickedchops LOL! If I tell you I’ve actually done that before does that only reinforce every Asian woman driver stereotype you guys have?!?
Those hooked on Twitters are helping the web site make loads of money. And those who have to answer “Do you Twitter?” in the negative can take solace in Lev Grossman’s words – “Just remember, the un-Twittered life is still worth living.”
