PPA on Recruitment Blitz during WSOP

With the World Series of Poker in full swing in Las Vegas, the Poker Players Alliance is taking advantage of the fact that so many players are in one location at once in order to swell its ranks. There are currently over one million people who are swear allegiance with the PPA, and the group is hoping that the WSOP will bring in even more players.
According to the man behind the scenes, membership director, Bryan Spadaro, the PPA makes contact with about 70 poker players each day of the tournament. Spadaro believes that around 20 out of these 70 eventually sign up to become members of the PPA, meaning that numbers will definitely increase considerably over the six week period of the WSOP.
The PPA has been hard at work trying to keep the game of poker out of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act which kicked into law at the beginning of the month. A petition was also presented to the US Treasury in a bid to keep poker and other skill games separate from UIGEA legislation, however there has been no reaction from the authorities on this matter.
In an interview given to Poker News Daily, the Executive Director of the PPA, John Papas remained optimistic about the group’s efforts and said: “There is a possibility that our petition could still be granted even though the enforcement date has come and gone. I wouldn’t put it as a high likelihood, but we haven’t heard from the Treasury.”
Pappas promised the members that he would keep working against the UIGEA. “We need clarification at the federal level of these laws. Our mission is unchanged,” he said. “We’ve always wanted to prevent the UIGEA from being a catastrophic event, which I think we’ve maybe succeeded in. We also want to establish a licensing and regulatory environment that U.S. players could play under.”
