Back From Puerto Rico Surf Trip
Written by Roger S | Sunday, December 27th, 2009
Me and my brother got back today from the surf trip we took to Puerto Rico in my effort to begin traveling more. The whole trip was pretty awesome, all we did was surf all day. There were waves every day.
The place is pretty cool, strange, ghetto, yet tropical all in one. I’m not sure if I’d visit Puerto Rico if I weren’t a surfer because there isn’t much to do besides snorkeling, fishing and the normal Caribbean stuff.
The dogs in Puerto Rico are hilarious. Like Costa Rica they are all over the place, except they are smart as all hell. I named them all Darwin because they know not to walk in the road and even look both ways before crossing the street.

The only dog I saw almost get hit was actually on a leash unlike every other dog there that roam the streets. My guess is all the dumb dogs died off and the smart ones were left, that or the locals trained them well as they beat the crap out of them with these canes. At first I thought there were just a bunch of blind people in Puerto Rico roaming around.
It was my first time ever in Puerto Rico, and I will be going back a lot. It sucked having to leave and I’m already bored as hell in Florida. Although, it is hard doing work when the waves are perfect everyday, nonetheless I didn’t do any work because the internet was skunky and just about no cell service.
We first surfed in Rincon the first week and stayed at the Horned Dorset (sick hotel, pic below). After that we went to Aquadilla and stayed at the Villamontana I brought back some nice souvenirs, a bunch of f***ing sea urchin prongs in my foot and hands. Every where you surf is reef bottom and I apparently fall the wrong way.

Some of the strangest things I saw was a lady walking a cow on a leash like it was a dog, me almost running over a horse as it booked it, at night, down a mountain road with some lady yelling at it and my brother bringing home stolen hotel towels, a bottle of spaghetti sauce and some microwave Mac and Cheese onto the $22,000 flight home. James from Blue Star upgraded us to a sick Lear 60 Jet, but used up all of the Chipleader credits, and then some. I can’t resist and will be reloading.

The waves got really big one day, probably the biggest waves I’ve ever seen/surfed. I wasn’t in the mood to drown that day so caught a few waves after about 30 minutes after I realized there was no way I could surf the waves with the small board I was riding as I skipped down the face of a massive left that if I had fallen on I probably would have drowned because I’m not used to surfing such big waves. Here is a pic taken with my little digital camera from a mountain top about 300 ft down and at least a mile away. The picture doesn’t do the size of the wave justice.

This was this morning at a place called surfers beach. They really need to rename it to turtles beach because it’s like an obstacle course out there with turtles all over the place. On this wave I took off to see a big ass turtle right in my wave, ruining a nice right.

That’s about all I can think of now. I have a bunch of pictures to post, but I disabled my facebook so maybe I’ll just put them there for awhile. Facebook is gay. Oh yeah, one more thing, Puerto Ricans and Pizza is out of hand. No lie we saw 3 pizza places in less than 1/4 of a mile. There are pizza places EVERYWHERE. I’m out. Later.

Wow, looks like that last wave you rode was about 13 ft? I’ve never seen or attempted anything over six, was falling on those tough to re-orient yourself?
Crazy you don’t even wear a rash guard dude. Cool you got out there, you should just buy property there – how long a flight is it?

The wave seems bigger in the picture than it actually was I think. It’s a pretty docile wave, the pic above that one on the other hand is much bigger, probably about 13-15ft. If I can find some nice land out there I’d be pretty sweet.

Nice waves. I would have drowned for sure.

Looks like an awsome trip. I have always wanted to go there to learn how to surf. Maybe one day soon. Good to see you are travelling more

It’s a good place to learn. There are plenty of spots where it doesn’t break too hard even if it’s big, and the crystal water is nice so you at least know what you’re going to hit if you fall.

maybe i could finally learn if i went there since someone never gave me lessons in florida
sucks that gorgeous long board your dad shaped got there like a week before i moved or i would’ve been all about learning when the water got warm again! looks like you had an amazing time. the video for that hotel was insane, so i can only imagine what it was like actually staying there. glad it was such a great trip

I think I am due some thanks for getting you over your fear of flying!

Sarah and Carly, both you made me over come the fear, the story is quick and short. I wanted to get away from poster #6 so bad that I left, only to realize I wanted to get back home as fast as I could after meeting poster #7.
Kidding of course! Thank you both.

Hey Roger-
This is your aunt, your Dad’s sister. He told me about your site and sent me a video of you surfing in Puerto Rico. Very cool. It’s great to connect with your Dad again!

Wow bro… I need to move. I live in Nevada and went surfing for the first time on a vacation to San Diego. I wish I could live that life all the time!
