Prahlad Friedman Makes 2009 Comeback
Written by RogerCP | Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009
Prahlad Friedman, once considered to be the most gifted online poker player in the industry, went through what many consider a professional resurrection by surfacing after three years of silence to grab the 2009 World Poker Tour Legends of Poker title this week.
Like a great white circling silently under the water, Friedman practically disappeared from the poker scene three years ago, but this summer he came up to grab his prey, after making a splash at the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event, finishing an impressive 64th place. The heads up game was played out against November Niner Kevin Schaffel.
Interviewed after the game about the aggressive play that both he and Schaffel displayed, Friedman said: “We both had a good amount of chips and you pick up a lot of money when you steal the blinds, antes and everything. If you just get blinded out, you get worn down to so little that even you have a lot, you don’t have that much. So it’s better with this structure… you want to play aggressive.”
With an appetite for more, Friedman entered the WPT Legends of Poker this month and yesterday became the newest WPT millionaire after winning over $1 million. His prize also includes a $25K buy in for the World Poker Tour World Championship.
Friedman first came to the world’s attention after finishing 20th in the 2006 World Series of Poker event, earning himself a cool $494,797 – his biggest single cash win thus far.
Prior to the 2006 WSOP, Friedman was better known by his aviator title Spirit Rock as one of the best online players in the world.
He learned his game as student at UC Berkely, honing his game at $15 – $30 limit hold ‘em tables, and then later switching to no limit games. Friedman’s online games usually comprise no limit hold ‘em and pot limit Omaha at limits of $25-50 and $50-100.
When asked if the poker industry would be seeing more of him now that he has got his appetite back with his new poker titles, Friedman said: “I might play a few tournaments. I’m not going to play billions of them like these guys do, but I might play a few of them. They’re good times, especially when you win!”
