Revenue at Penn Casinos Up

All eyes have been on Pennsylvania casinos since the state decided to allow the introduction of games such as poker and blackjack. Each time another casino applies for – and receives – a license to expand its gambling activities, it makes the news. It is no wonder then, that against this backdrop, Pennsylvania casinos are able to report an increase of 30% in revenue for the month of April.

According to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, the state’s nine casinos generated just under $200 million in gross revenue combined. Compared to the same month of 2009, this was an increase of 29.6%.

Of this figure, the Pennsylvanian authorities saw a 55% cut, meaning that $107.4 million made its way into state coffers from Penn casinos.

Some casinos performed better than others, as can be expected. Parx Casino, for example, saw revenue gains of 13.3% (from just over $31 million to $35,264,000 million. Another casino worth noting for its growth was Hollywood Casino with a 10.5% growth.

Two other casinos, the Sands Bethlehem and Rivers Casino were not included in the assessment as they have not been in operation for over a year. However, the Sands reported revenues of a $22 million for last month.

Mount Airy Casino, unfortunately, saw a sharp drop in revenue – over 20% to only $12.1 million in just one year. Nevertheless, the casino said that it was gearing up for the expansion of its operations to include table games, and is in the process of hiring an extra 350 people to serve as poker dealers and other casino floor staff.

It is believed that with the introduction of table games, revenues will be climbing even higher at those casinos that reported growth and see a change in fortune for casinos who did not.
