Staying in Shape

Written by RogerCP | Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

I can’t stand sitting behind a fricken computer either playing poker or doing affiliate stuff anymore. For me I have to do things a couple hours at a time and get out and do something in between.

Lately I’ve been going to the gym about 3-4 times a week but trying to go to the boxing gym 4 times as well. It’s difficult as I’m 6′1″ and only 165lbs and boxing makes you lose weight like crazy, especially down here in Florida…the place has no AC!

I’ve always felt if you went to the gym (for guys) there should be a reason for it. Every time I see a meat head walk in the gym I just wonder why the hell they even do it. They look retarded, if they had to run 100 yards they’d probably pass out and if you dropped them in a pool they’d drown. Other than looking big in a t-shirt I see no point.

So for me I’ve always kept reps in the 10-12 range and try to burn out my muscle. I’ll never try to “max out” and only do 2-3 reps. I really see no point but Im no expert but I’d rather be athletic than lift a car.

But the boxing gym I’ve been going to is really cool. It’s $75 a month but there are usually 2-3 trainers in there to work with you whenever you want doing drills and such. I can go in there for an hour and waste my time doing something completely wrong when the trainer can spot it right away. It’s kind of like golf in a sense, except when you practice at boxing you actually get better, lol. On the downside you can F up your wrists pretty bad and if you do play golf, it’s not a good thing. But this gym gives you a code to the place so I end up going at like 3am because of my f’d up sleep schedule.

If you’ve never boxed before it’s a really fun thing to do. It’s a heck of a lot harder than it looks and if you want to get in shape, it beats running like a lab rat.

Those who say they’ve been screwed with a slow metabolism make me sick! God I wish I didn’t have to remind myself to eat just so I wouldn’t look like I came out of a concentration camp. Plus eating is so expensive anyway, I’d rather just go without, ha.

Anyways Im looking forward to this summer. I’ve been pretty healthy, minus that virus where I lost 20lbs before the Pokerstars/Bahamas trip so this should be a fun summer sparring and surfing (if we ever get good waves again).

It seems like a lot of people in the poker marketing are the same way, they generally are running, wakeboarding, snowboarding, or somethin. I guess it’s because most of the players or affiliates are a bit younger which is cool.

Nice post Roger. I’ve wanted to check out boxing for a while but don’t have any places to go around here. And I definitely want to learn to surf as soon as I move somewhere warmer lol.

Boxing gyms are awesome for burning a ton of calories. I wanted to comment on your car post but couldn’t find the comment box. My first car was a 1978 trans am that was a total rust bucket pile of crap. I paid $500 for it. It looked like the car that David Spade drove in Joe Dirt. I drove this for the last 2 years of high school, and it was ghetto supreme. I’ll dig up some pics and post on my blog soon.

Not sure how old you are John, but it’s always rough when the car you get is older than you. :) Did you have you gat in the front seat, lol.

But yea I had to pull the comments on recent posts because the spammers. Now they just go to other older comments, lol.

Yoga is sick for relaxing and your muscles. You should give it a try before you write it off. It will probably help you sleep better too.
