The First Family Of Poker

Written by RogerCP | Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

The tag of the “First Family” is enough to stir a controversy, but that is how Doyle’s Room is describing the Brunson family in its latest tournament offering. No one can dispute that Doyle is legendary. Son Todd is heard about on and off and mostly for the wrong reasons. Last he was in the news, or at least on the grapevine, for being broke. The rest of the family comprising daughter Pamela, daughter-in-law Anjela and nephew Ken are non starters.

This is a bounty tournament and the members of the first family are the bounty. It is called Beat the Brunsons $100,000 Challenge. “Think you can outplay the First Family of poker”, says the challenge. “Do it and we’ll pay you $100,000”, it adds. The head of the family Doyle also known as “Tex Dolly” carries a bounty of $1,000. Todd and Pamela, who holds the moniker “Queen Kitty”, carry a bounty of $500. Ken, a.k.a. “Tex Ken”, and Anjela, a.k.a. “Russian Chick”, carry a bounty of $250. And if one player can knock of the entire family there is a jackpot of $100,000. New players still get the doylesroom promotional code bonus of $660 which is exclusive to Compatiblepoker.

Doyle has a number of firsts to his credit. He was the first to win WSOP main events back to back; he was the first player to win $1 million in tournament prize money and he was the first player to win a WSOP Main Event and a WPT title. In 2006 Bluff Magazine declared him to be the most influential force in poker. The Doyle’s Room bio says, “He virtually invented the phenomenon that is Texas Hold’em. He paved the way for a sport once viewed to be played by only roughnecks and criminals, but is now played by today’s world leaders and top executives.”

Todd learnt to play poker while at university. He has a solitary WSOP bracelet and when he won that in 2005, Todd and Doyle became the only father and son pair to win WSOP championships. Todd has achieved some success in televised poker. In January this year the poker forums were filled with the news of his investments having gone bad and he not having funds to bankroll his poker games.

Pamela’s claim to fame has been outlasting brother Todd and father Doyle in the last eight tournaments they played together. After playing professional poker for a few years following her graduation, Pamela left poker and took a job in a company that manages some of the most prestigious retirement homes in California. After rising to become the Executive Director, Pamela resigned from the company and is back into full time poker.

Anjela is Todd’s wife. She has played in the regular bounty tournaments at Doyle’s Room before and has been described as having “brains and beauty”. For live games Anjela prefers the family’s favorite hunting ground, the Bellagio.

Ken Hale is well known in Las Vegas as Doyle’s right hand man. He also plays poker.
