Time for Surgery and Thin Sites
Written by RogerCP | Thursday, August 27th, 2009
I’ve been putting off going to the doctor for long enough. It’s been about 2 months since my nose fully closed up on the right side, and partially closed on the left. If you’re just curious about thin affiliate sites skip towards the bottom of this.
I’m going to be calling a nose doctor tomorrow to see what kind of surgery I’m going to need. It’s all from boxing and when I was younger I broke it surfing. From what I read on the internet I have a deviated septum. Basically the bone or cartilage in the lower middle part of my nose is bent to the side and is completely blocking me from breathing.
There is a pretty big bump in the middle now from Boxing and it starts bleeding every time I spar, even with a facebar. The facebar works but if I spar anyone near the 200lb mark and they hit me on the bar, it rams it into my nose making it worse….but it prevents it from breaking again.
As much as I hate doctors, and the fact this will be the first time I’ve ever gone under the knife, it’s time. When I lay down to sleep it’s impossible and I wake up all dry mouthed and shit because I have to breathe out of my mouth. I sound like one of those 300lb fat people walking around too because it’s such a struggle to breathe.
Hopefully they just go in an cut some cartilage out and that’s that and I’ll be back sparring in a month. Sparring with the f’d nose isn’t too much fun either as I get so tired. With a full mouth piece, and not being able to get air in through my nose it’s like running in 120 degree heat, plugging your nose, and breathing through a straw in your mouth. Kind of makes me wonder how many more rounds I could go with some actual air in my lungs.
Thin Sites Gambling Sites
Ok, so I’ve been doing some research as to why Google is not reconsidering gamblingsites.com. Apparently it’s being considered a “thin affiliate site”. After asking in the Google help forums a Google employee confirmed this was the problem. Basically they categorize an affiliate site as thin, and don’t rank them well if they believe they basically serve as a router to the gaming site and provide no actual benefit to the user.
Us as affiliates know this is BS, or gaming sites wouldn’t be willing to pay us so much. The reason you see a lot of affiliates link to gamblers anonymous or other high authority sites in their niche is because it’s supposed to help you not get in this category as a thin site.
Either way it’s pretty gay as the site has 82 pages or original content, the more important stuff written by myself. The basic lesson here is make sure any domain you buy isn’t penalized before you buy it! Going through G’s reconsideration request is a friggen pain in the ass. The algo’s can be manipulated, but when a person doesn’t feel your site isn’t good enough, tough luck!
Peace for now,
Roger

This is kind of ironic since my chick is making me check with the doc to see if I have a deviated septum, let us know how it goes I didn’t realize I’d have to get surgery if it was (she swears it is).
Also I don’t understand Googles approach on your domain, the domain itself is doing exactly what it is intended – helping a visitor narrow down a search to find the gambling site.
Isn’t a directory meant only to filter people to the sites/categories they were looking for? Kind of like DMOZ?
I don’t know what the answer is here, but I wish you luck.

Good luck with the surgery!

Thanks Cheryle.
Yea man, if it doesn’t really bother you, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. If it does I hear they just go in and cut some of the crooked stuff out.
(Im putting off calling the doctor due to laziness for a couple days)
That was the same stance I took about the domain when talking about it in the G forum, especially since it is plural. But when looked through biased eyes of any one of the many G engineers, who knows what they’ll feel like re-including.

Hey Roger,
Sorry to hear about your nose, I hope it works out alright after the surgery.
Regarding the “thin affiliate label” I am pretty sure this or something similar has been applied to one of my sites as well. It’s such a bitch because as you said even if you offer a good amount of original content, if whoever is in charge that day of re-inclusions or applying this filter doesn’t agree than your site is S.O.L.
Just wondering how you plan on handling the issue from now forward? Do you think this is a permanent filter or something that lifts after time like the sandbox, etc. Anyways good luck with the site and I hope it works out.

Yo Roger, check out Joe Rogan’s blog post talking about his deviated septum operation http://blog.joerogan.net/archives/1450 pretty intense, good luck with it.
As for the site, what about stripping it down in terms of ads/affiliate links, add a bunch of educational content (like how to articles), and get a few more good links and try again. Maybe that could change their mind?

Holy shit Holloway, that post by Rogan scared the shit out of me, yet was probably the funniest thing I’ve ever read on a blog. I’ve heard his standup is funny but damn, so is his writing.
I might have to rethink the ” “demon load,” “nose rape,” “asshole taser brain vacuum” loop”, surgery.
But yea, that’s what I had planned unfortunately with GS. We’ll just save the site as it is and redo it, take off anything that looks like an ad and go from there. Kinda go with a PWP, a Randy Ray look or how you guys had SG at the beginning. Like Goldie said, whata bitch!

The nose job can’t be as scary as flying to the Bamahas can it? And how did google know how thin you are?

Slotsgeek was not that bad in the beginning…its almost the same minus a few banners here and there
Honestly though I would really focus on just making super long awesome pages and go from there. Actually I have a pretty neat idea for you that would help give it that “unique” feel..so check your email.

I also have a deviated septum and my ENT has been telling me to go for a surgery. I face most of the problem in winter season…..nothing is worse than abruptly waking up in middle of the night, with blocked nose and dry throat….can imagine how you must be feeling
Good luck with the surgery man! And I’m also hoping to get a few days without any work so that I get my fuckin nasal septum straighten up
