Today Florida Welcomes Bigger Poker Games

Today – July 1st – marks the day that poker players in Florida begin a new era of quality games and tournaments. Thanks to a pact signed with the Seminole tribe, poker players will be able to expand their wagering limits considerably, play longer hours and enjoy faster poker action in general.

The new law allows all poker and card rooms across the state to extend their operating hours, as well as institute higher buy ins for no limit games.

The law that kicks in today removes the requirement that buy in for cash games at state sanctioned poker rooms had a maximum of $100. In the 23 poker rooms currently run by jail alai frontons and horse and dog tracks, high stake poker games will become a common feature.

Changes in tournament action will also be seen. While tournaments in the past in Florida had maximum buy ins of $1000, that restriction has been lifted as well, opening the doors for a huge influx of professionals seeking high stake poker action, and even the shifting of televised tournaments from other states such as Nevada to Florida.

“We’ll have new people playing with us that would never play with us before because our limits were so low,” said Dan Francati, President of the Daytona Beach Kennel Club and Poker Room. “We’ll draw in players from other states. With these limits, we can now compete with other big poker states.”

The deal struck with the Seminole Tribe means that limits at their seven casinos, such as the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa, have also been lifted. These casinos have always been allowed to keep open 24 hours a day; however, there have always existed restrictions on the opening times of their card rooms.

The new legislation allows these card rooms to remain open 24 hours a day on Friday and Saturday, only restricting them to 18 hours a day from Sunday to Thursday.
