Todd Brunson Broke

One of the latest stories circulating on the poker message boards is that Todd Brunson is in financial trouble. And the source of the news is Todd Brunson himself. The story has been put together from a post Brunson made on the CardPlayer magazine and comments made on the television show Poker After Dark.

There is no denying that Brunson has made millions playing poker. But apparently he parked all that cash in the wrong place. Only according to Brunson the investments were basically sound but went bad because of the current financial crises the United States is facing. One set of investments was made in restaurants and bars. Normally that is a great investment because people need to eat and drink. But now they are doing it at home and not in any of Brunson’s places. Reportedly many of the restaurants and bars that Brunson had invested in have closed down and the real estate value of those places has nosedived. This is a problem he is facing with a project in Las Vegas that involves developing an entertainment complex there. The value of the property has fallen so much that it is worthless as collateral and banks are refusing to lend.

However there is bad news on the poker front as well. Brunson will no longer be appearing on Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker as he was scheduled to. The grapevine has it that he has problems in putting up the required bankroll and is looking out for sponsors to fund him. It is a catch 22 situation. He cannot play unless he has sponsors and he will not get sponsors unless he is playing. Today new names are hitting the limelight everyday and therefore a player is as good as his last win. If Brunson does not set things right soon he may well disappear from public memory.

On the poker forums there is plenty of sympathy for Todd Brunson and even more advice. Two courses are being recommended. On Two Plus Two IamPro recommends that Brunson stick with playing poker. This is not bad advice considering there was a time that Brunson made over $13.5 million in two days playing a heads-up, $50,000-$100,000 Limit Hold’em game. All he needs is another run like that. The second advice is less adventurous though perhaps more prudent. On the same forum Iozen suggests he go to his dad Doyle Brunson. Doyle has not only made more money than Todd but is continuing to do so. And with his Doyles Room online poker site accepting USA after switching from Microgaming to Cake Poker Network the future is rosier. Now it remains to be seen whose advice Todd Brunson will follow.
