UFC is Becoming Annoying

Written by Roger S | Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

This whole controversy over the UFC vs Boxing shit is really getting old. There are way too many facets of both sports to try and compare them, and the guys who do, usually have never stepped in any sort of ring.

Case in point, this weekends UFC fight between James Toney and Randy Cotoure or “Boxing vs MMA”. I see MMA fans as very “fad” oriented. They chant UFC, UFC, UFC, during the fight not even knowing what they’re chanting for. They’re chanting for the brand, UFC, not their sport, MMA. Hell they might as well been chanting PPV, PPV.

So you put an extremely washed up boxer against a seasoned more active and in shape MMA fighter and despite my apparent bias towards boxing, we all know what was going to happen (I put a bet on Toney knowing I would lose but just couldn’t root for Cotoure). Randy shoots, takes him to the ground and it turns into a crappy ass ground fight. I guess the old saying “Stand up and fight like a man” doesn’t apply in MMA.

One last thing, boxing is not a dying sport it’s simply in need of a fresh batch of fighters. Everyone jumped on the MMA bandwagon because it doesn’t take 20 years of training to compete and is something that even girls are in to watch. If there’s no immediate action the “fans” are booing in a minute….

With that said, whatever. I quit paying for any MMA/UFC fights simply because the fans, and the fighters annoy the hell out of me. In the end the boxers win no matter what. They’re not in some socialistic organization where their master, Dana White tells them every move to make. Boxers have free will, are capitalistic people, and therefore make the hundreds of millions of dollars that they do while MMA fighters complain about their low pay. The majority of MMA fighters just end up with a busted up mug for the rest of their life.

Give MMA another 20 years to mature and I think boxers will give it the respect it deserves. When you have guys training since they were 5 years old to box, and some joe blow can become possible belt holding champion in MMA after a few years of training no real sports enthusiast will give them the same props.

In the end I respect both sports. Anyone to gear up and step into a ring knowing they could lose or their life deserves major respect.

With that little rantage, I’m heading back home to Florida after my month vaca out in California. We got some pretty good waves and it was a nice change of pace. Hopefully I’ll beat the hurricanes before they reach the Florida swell path and score some more waves! Probably off to Budapest and surrounding European countries at the end of September so….looking forward to seeing anyone who’s going.

Later,
Roger

  1. Wow Says:

Your an idiot. First mms takes years it’s not learned easily or Toney would have won or at least made an effort. And while I agree boxers have more breathing room than ufc fighters they also make bigger mistake(zab Jiddah and his street fights) your an idiot one more time. You said something about respect mma hasn’t gotten but Bernard Hopkins gave it his due in his interview about James Toney. And really it’s called mma not boxing if a fighter is better equiped in than ground he doesn’t have to “fight like a man”. Damn your a fukin idiot

  2. RogerCP Says:

Thanks for proving my point about why UFC fans are annoying.

    “The Idiot”

  3. sam Says:

MMA fans in general are fucking annoying.

  4. Casey Says:

Yup its annoying to be proven wrong eh Roger….your post is full of errors and while opeds are opinions theya re not supposed to be fiction.

  5. badself Says:

You are an idiot. First of all MMA, as pointed out, does take years. These guys are usually blackbelts. Second, Toney knew that MMA fights are ground games, and he wasn’t ready – so who’s the idiot there? But on a more fundamental level you are an idiot for not knowing what socialism means, for not realizing that top fighter make loads of money, and that fans like the UFC brand. You are also an idiot for not realizing that boxers, like MMA fighters, are controlled. They have managers, they have contracts and they have to answer to outside pressures. They cannot float around at free will. Finally, you are an idiot.

  6. sumerseasons Says:

Roger, I must say you obviously have something against mma and because you seem so closed minded and blind to how talented these guys are. A 48 year old man just whipped the hell out of your legendary boxer granted he is 42, also old but thats beside the point, toney called out dana white, floyd mayweather trash talks mma, I mean your making it look like mma has something against boxing when really mma shows nothing but respect for those guys, hince courture interviews vs toneys..just be glad it wasnt a street fight or your guy wouldnt be breathing today, love ya, mma fan-

  7. Sean Says:

Your an extremely ignorant and clueless writer. I stumbled across this site by searching some fight results. Congrads on the high seo number by the way, however that is as far as any praise will go. I have no problem with boxing, in fact I love a good boxing match but dont try and belittle MMA just because it has far overtaken boxing on popularity. Boxing and MMA can both be prominent and even have a cross over of fans. Boxing(the sport) and boxing fans could learn a lot from the UFC. You could also learn a lot as your opinions are so misinformed. Obviously you have an inferiority complex towards MMA. As you clearly are not an MMA fan the only logical and rational thing for you to do is NOT watch/buy MMA PPV’s. However you decide to give the UFC free publicity here.

  8. g brown Says:

As a fan of both sports, I guess I’ll put in my two cents worth…

First off, you do make some good points. I also don’t like the match up b/w Toney and Couture. it is a bit of a freak-show. However, if Toney is going to run his mouth about how he’s going to KO Brock Lesnar, Randy Couture, etc. and how crappy MMA is (and chase the UFC president all over the country) he’d better be very prepared to back up that claim. Obviously, he was not. Toney should have used his head here and realized that he needed takedown defence to allow him to maul Couture with his fists. And I’m not sure where that “stand up and fight like a man” quote originated, but 95% of the street fights I’ve seen end up on the ground at some point. It’s a fact. Moreover, if JT ever got in the ring with the likes of Brock Lesnar, he’d be murdered regardless of his preparation. Like that guy or not, he’s a gorilla.

I don’t particularly like most of the UFC fans – I’ve been to my share of live UFC and MMA events and yes the reaction to a 30 second lull in action means every moron is booing. Boxing fans do appreciate their sport more. If any UFC fan disagrees with that fact, go watch a live boxing event and experience it for yourself!!

What I don’t agree with in your statement is the fact that UFC fighters become champs with only a couple years of training. In fact, I can’t think of one UFC (or MMA) champ right now without an extensive background in some fighting discipline. From what I see, the top guys in both sports are highly trained (for a # of yrs) and have tremendous work ethic, usually combined with natural talent.

    Later days.

  9. g brown Says:

*and by “ring”, I meant “octagon”. Toney would pound Lesnar’s face off in a boxing ring.

  10. David R Says:

oh my goodness… boxers have a “free will” and they are not in some socialistic organization with a master… really!! how about you ask some of the greatest fighters ever, Mike Tyson and others how it was answering to their master Don King. take any other big time boxer and fill in the blank with their promoter. You don’t even know your own sport. to say tony is washed up and couture is seasoned is hillarious. coutrue is 47 years old… 5 years older than Tony. It’s almost unheard of that someone that age still fights MMA. If anything, they are both just seasoned. If tony is washed up as you say, it is a comment on the sad state of boxing, since he is the CURRENT IBA and NABO heavyweight champion. Sadly, boxing has been declining since Tyson self destructed (I am a big tyson and boxing fan) and is declining to be fully deminished in the near futre. IT was good while it lasted. but MMA is here to stay and boxing is history.

  11. Smig Says:

“So you put an extremely washed up boxer against a seasoned MMA fighter”.

True, the following is also true:

“So you put an extremely washed up MMA fighter against a seasoned boxer”.

This is what people would be saying if Couture was picking a fight with Toney in Boxing.

Your choice of words reveals a heavily biased opinion. Couture is 47, has retired once and is not competitive anymore in the UFC heavyweight division. He’s on his way out for a long time.

And about that “you put” part, that was all Toney’s harassment that got him into this mess.

“In the end the boxers win no matter what. They’re not in some socialistic organization where their master, Dana White tells them every move to make. Boxers have free will, are capitalistic people, and therefore make the hundreds of millions of dollars”

Yeah, fuck socialism! Lets cheer for the guys that make the most money!

“One last thing, boxing is not a dying sport it’s simply in need of a fresh batch of fighters.”

Boxing won’t die but will shrink since MMA is growing and it also contains Boxing. Although I think that both sports will share many fans.

“Everyone jumped on the MMA bandwagon because it doesn’t take 20 years of training to compete”

Boxing is just one discipline in MMA, if any top MMA fighter needs to dominate at least one discipline, then MMA takes (at least) the same amount of time to learn as boxing.

“and some joe blow can become possible belt holding champion in MMA after a few years of training no real sports enthusiast will give them the same props.”

Who are you referring to? Many fighters that I know in the UFC have been born and have grown up in gyms of whatever combat sport got them into MMA. If some guy can kick their ass with a few years of training, why wouldn’t he deserve respect? He would deserve even more respect since that would be such an amazing achievement. That wouldn’t be the norm though, as you’ll surely agree.

“In the end I respect both sports.”

    You clearly don’t.

  12. amoz Says:

wow you say mma fans are annoying yet when you get called out you cry about it with no smart retort understand this is there not one mma fighter that has chased down a promoter of boxing bad mouthing the sport and its fighters calling them pussies at every event for a year toney did all the boxing community is bad mouthing mma because the know there product no longer stands a chance im mean with boxing they throw a few punched hug get broken up and do it again there fights are boring and they know it so they bad mouth the new guy in fear or lossing there large pay checks from hbo and shotime you may not want to believe it but boxing is dying there will be no more big draw boxers after this current generartion oh and to the scarred up faces id rather have scars than brain damage any day toney was 5 years younger than couture and you can only understand every third word that comes out of his mouth due to the fact he got hit in the head for a living there are no brain damaged mma fighters period due to the fact that there are more ways to win im a mma trainer here in fla i know it takes more than a few years to master mma you need to master at least 3 forms of combat to be able to do anything on a competion level most of the ufc guys started out as wresters in high school around the sametime 90% of pro boxer started training bad mouth the ufc all you want and mma for that matter your free to your opinion but that doesnt make it fact no boxer will ever beat a mma fighter in a true fight almost all fights end up on the ground and that is fact

  13. Badself Says:

I guess you stopped posting the feedback because everyone kept saying you’re an idiot. Sad.

  14. RogerCP Says:

I stopped because I was sleeping, and while I’d like to respond to every comment it would take all day and won’t respond when the first sentence is “you’re an idiot”.

There are some good responses by true MMA fans/fighters and the typical response I was expecting from the tards. Never did I say UFC fans are idiots, but many of them are very annoying and are in it just because it’s the “thing” right now.

If Toney stepped up and fought Cotoure (yes misspelled on purpose) then Cotoure should give him the same option of fighting in a boxing match.

I have no hate for MMA, just annoyance by many of the fans and the boxing vs MMA in general. Maybe Toney needed the money, I have no idea but look at him when he fought Holyfield, then look at Cotoure during his glory days. Bit of a shape difference.

    Peace, love and happiness,

    “The Idiot”

  15. Jelop Says:

Ive boxed for about 10 years now, think mma is a good sport but side with the author. The dousche bag fans make me hate the sport. We watched a fight at a local pub, douschebag MMA guy wearing his tattoo looking shirt talks shit because I said the fights were a waste of time, he got up in my grill and I just step back quick hooked him in the chin. Fucker was down for the count, we left, I don’t plan on going to the pubs anymore in avoidance of the puppets.

  16. Anthony Says:

Ok Roger….gotta clear some things up.

    1. It is not the MMA fans that are annoying. It is the boxing fans. MMA fans for the most part appreciate boxing for what it is. For some reason Boxing fans are threatened (or whatever) by MMA. Many Boxing analyst have downed MMA on a regular basis. You do NOT hear this from the MMA community. You here MMA fighters constantly talking about how they admire boxing as one of the aspects of their own sport.

    2. You obviously have a huge bias against MMA (not surprising) from the sound of your comments. Comments like “the typical response I was expecting from the tards” show this.

    3. Get the facts straight about the Toney vs Couture match. Toney came to Dana White and asked to fight MMA. He ran his mouth about how he would dominate. Dana signed him and offered to let him fight Kimbo Slice. If you are not aware who he is then let me say he is a striker. Toney declined calling him a bum and said he could beat Lesnar. If you are not aware Lesnar defeated Couture for the HW title. Dana put Toney against Couture after that.

    4. Toney didn’t man up. He was so cocky that he thought that he could come in and walk thru the UFC. He took offense to Dana saying that a straight boxer would do poorly in the UFC. Couture understands that he is not a boxer. Even though he boxed in the Army he knows that he could not compete with the elite in boxing. Toney tossed out that he wrestled in high school and that he could choke Couture out…irony? Why would you and all the other boxers think that Couture should face Toney under boxing rules? He didn’t disrespect Toney and boxing….Toney disrespected Couture and MMA.

    5. You are obviously not aware of the tremendous strategy that goes into ground fighting. MMA fans do though.

    6. Have a question….Let’s say that you have a boxer that is know for his speed vs a boxer that is known for his power….does the boxer that has speed stand and slug with the power guy OR does he move using his speed to his advantage? Obviously he moves right. Why would you expect any different from an MMA fighter. A guy that is good on the ground is not gonna stand up with a striker. To think he would/should is ignorant.

    7. MMA fighters train from a young age also. Every UFC belt holder has at least one Black Belt in a Martial Art…..with the exception of Brock Lesnar. Lesnar was a 2 time all American wrestler with an all time record of 206-5. You don’t get any of that with “after a few years of training.”

  17. Anthony Says:

Oh…and when this match was announced that boxers were about 50/50. Half talked about how fast Toney’s hands are and how he would dominate Couture. The other half started making excuses and stating that WHEN Toney beat Couture MMA fans would have to admit that boxing was superior.

When Toney lost suddenly he was washed up….didn’t move…..no punching power…et

  18. RogerCP Says:

    Hi Anthony,

Thanks for the response from what sounds like a true fan. I do agree with most of your points. To me, it’s more upsetting as a boxer myself to see someone like Toney disgrace the sport (boxing) for what was obviously for money.

Randy did what he had to do to defeat him, just as a boxer would dodge and block haymakers in a boxing match if a mma fighter came to the boxing ring. Either way you’re going to get a dull fight and both fans lose out. This fight should have never happened, just like the Roy Jones JR/ Silva fight shouldn’t be allowed to happen.

  19. Anthony Says:

I think Toney disgraced himself. I personally do not like boxing. Nothing against it. I respect it and I teach aspects of it to my fighters. However I grew up around Martial Arts and watching Kick Boxing. I will watch boxing on occasion.

I don’t think Toney did anything to disgrace boxing. Boxing is very specialized. It is designed around punching and punching only. Therefore using strictly boxing strategy in MMA is foolish. There is too much other stuff going on.

I think you would find that MMA fighters wouldn’t throw as many hay makers as you think. The over hand right works because of the small gloves. They are harder to defend and require more head movement.

Also as someone who helps train amateur fighters….I have yet to see a case where the average Joe could walk up and challenge anyone that has been training for even just a few months. See no reason why the average Joe could train for years and be any threat either.

  20. marine Says:

boxing matches are 1000 times more dramatic n exciting then mma matches most of em are fucking boring who wants to see niggas wrestle

  21. Anthony Says:

I have to disagree marine. I have seen very few boxing matches that are nearly as exciting as almost any MMA match.

  22. Anon Says:

This post is the perfect example of boxing fans getting in a huge fit over MMA. Don’t try to pretend you’re an MMA fan, you don’t even know anything about it obviously.

You think UFC fans are annoying? Take a look in the mirror.

  23. John Says:

I’ll have to agree that MMA fans are annoying. It’s got to the point where I’d rather watch the fight at home than go to a bar just due to the amount of roid raged d-bags in sparkly t-shirts. I know not all mma fans are that way, but in my area they are.

  24. Teddy Says:

I agree with you. MMA is not what people think it is. These guys are being hyped up by Dana White and Joe Rogan, etc. I believe that Boxing can go back to a golden age some day. Now for MMA fighters, they are being called the best fighters in the world which isn’t very true. I feel that the fighters are gone from the ufc, its an athletic contest now with different levels. Fighters are people who aren’t athletes, they love to fight, it runs through their blood, its inside of them. It comes from very deep down inside and a real true fighter and warrior would be fighting even without pay. Trust me I know this because I have stepped into a ring before multiple times and done battle with another person that wanted to put my lights out. Boxing will come back some day, all we need is someone close to Ali , that’s all.

  25. xYassassinYx Says:

I agree with points from both arguments and I’m with John on this – the MMA fans in my area are on roids and pretty much know nothing about MMA and its history (of course not all fans are like this).

I much prefer to watch MMA nowadays, i respect everyones opinion and thats the great thing about discussion (people having different opionions) but i honestly can’t bear to watch two grown men throw a few sloppy punches and then hug every few seconds – bores me to tears. Whereas in MMA there is much more action.

Also yeah, Randy shouldn’t have to step into a boxing ring, James Toney chased the UFC for a fight and refused Kimbo Slice then Randy stepped up. After seeing how much weight Toney had lost I thought the fight would be great but wow it was just awful and seemed like he didn’t even train MMA.

Seriously, I don’t think boxing will ever get back to the level it was in the Tyson era etc.

Also the idiot comment is pretty uncalled for, can’t people express their opinions anymore?!

  26. RogerCP Says:

It won’t ever reach the Ali, Foreman, Tyson or any of those days. People want to watch heavy weights and the Klitchko brothers are not fan pleasing.

Even though Silva has some skills in the ring as a boxer, he won’t be able to compete against Jones Jr. You all musta forgot! :)

    Video gives me goose bumps..
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDWnMXzgeZo

  27. SarahSmile Says:

as a chick who watches both (& isn’t in to it just cause it’s “in” but genuinely has admiration for the skill involved in both boxing & mma), i’ll admit i routed for couture because i truly think he’s a good fighter. i knew if it came to a stand up match toney would bring it but obviously expecting an mma fight to remain standing is a pretty naive perception. i have admiration for both fighters though.

as for jones jr. fuggedaboutit :) that man’s got skill! & when i say skill i mean you can knock a man out while doing a shuffle & a shimmy with a little swagger, yeah, boy’s got my backing any day! i remember the first time i saw that highlight real, just sick!

oh & for all you f*ckers who keep rambling on about what an idiot he is, it didn’t seem to me like he was bashing either, everyone’s entitled to their own opinion & though i may not agree with everything said, dude’s still gotta right to say it so get over yourselves! funny thing is you are the ones who really do give the fans a bad name. as do the affliction wearing, barbed wire tattooed, gelled hair, ‘roided up ass holes who like to talk a buncha smack to everyone after the fight cause they’re soooo cool. oh wait, maybe you guys are one in the same ;)

  28. Big-T Says:

If UFC guy tries to stand and fight real boxer, end result goes like this.

    Mercer KO Sylvia 20 seconds

    Timberrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  29. MJ Says:

Great example of linkbait and lol at “sparkly shirts” holloway.

I’m not trained in either sport nor do I follow either very much but I have a lot of respect for anyone who works hard at being the best they can be, I could personally do without all the grappling and would prefer people “stand up” and fight like “the idiot” mentioned but that’s just me.

  30. Anthony Says:

@Teddy – What is this nonsense about MMA fighters not being fighters? Also….I don’t have anything against boxing, however how can you say that MMA fighters are not the best in the world? They are the ONLY fighters that include virtually every aspect of a what can happen in a fight.

@Big-T – I love when people bring up Mercer. The same people seem to forget that he got beat by UFC reject Kimbo Slice. They also forget that Silvia was perhaps the least talented Champion I have ever seen. He relied on size alone….he sure didn’t rely on his solid jaw.

@MJ – If you do not appreciate the ground game then you should go somewhere and learn a little about it. That is not me being sarcastic. The technique and strategy to a ground game is mind blowing.

@ EVERYONE – What is the deal with the steroid crap? The rage comes from being constantly put down by the boxing community.

  31. Anthony Says:

@xYassassinYx – It didn’t look like he did any training to me either. For me Toney pretty much sums up the boxing community when it comes to MMA. When asked by Joe Rogan if he was going to work on his ground game before coming back out, Toney said that his ground game was alright. He just didn’t expect Randy to be quite as agressive.

Really? Because from what I saw all he did was lay flat on his back, throw arms up, wasn’t even aware enough to keep from being put up against the cage, showed no idea how to defend the submission and couldn’t even tap out correctly. On Randy’s aggressiveness. Should actually watched some film.
