US Gambling Tides are TurningSome much needed good news has been circulating the web today as iMEGA has their hearing for the Temporary Restraining Order against the UIGEA.
More good news springs up as the European Union is urged to ask for $100 billion in trade sanctions for lost revenues due to the UIGEA.
But first let’s take a look at the iMEGA vs Gonzales case. By now most casual gamblers could care less about the subjects mentioned above but the impact it could have on internet gambling in the US is substantial. Most US poker players don’t realize how devastating pending regulations could be on their ability to play online poker.
In the hearing today in the US District Court of New Jersey, Judge Mary Cooper heard both sides in regards to US gambling. On one side, iMEGA pleaded for a Restraining Order against the UIGEA while the US government pleaded to have the case dismissed on various accounts.
Many speculated that the case would be thrown out hands down but in fact the opposite happened. The Judge said she needed more time to review because the case had such a “complicated” background. This undoubtedly is good news as it seems the skeptics were wrong and the case does have some legitimacy.
While the iMEGA case was going on the European Union made headlines at CNN and Reuters. The EU is being urged to ask for $100 billion in trade sanctions, although many believe this number is widely inflated. Previous numbers speculated the value to be in the $7 billion range.
When the UIGEA first passed mentions of it only spread across local poker sites but now with the WTO involved it is finally getting the news coverage it deserves. Not only did the UIGEA have an impact on US poker players it may now have a global economic impact with trade partners.
