Ziigmund Opens Coinflip.com

Ilari Sahamies, more popularly known as Ziigmund, has launched his own blog site and around it built an online poker community. Though the site went live on the 20th of January, Ziigmund issued a press release only late last week. It said, “After several requests, I wanted to start my blog on a brand new site that is not filled with flashing banners, but is a simple, slick, and cool poker community. My blog and videos will be updated as frequently as possible and I hope that poker players everywhere will often visit with comments and questions.”
The poker community is called Coinflip.com. At a time when the poker fraternity is desperately trying to prove that poker is game of skill and not a gambling game, “Coinflip.com” seems regressive. But that is over done with now. Coinflip.com has the right slots for an online poker community. There are sections on news, blogs, forums, videos and player profiles. The videos all feature Ziigmund, at least of now. And that stands to reason because it is his blog site. The current videos show him at the Main Event at the Helsinki Freezeout in which he finished runner-up. There are also videos of him playing Phil Ivey at Full Tilt Poker.
The Poker Profiles are interesting. In addition to the usual stuff, the profiles carry information on the marital status and children, which definitely creates a more personal link. There is a section of the profiles that is sub titled “Public Perception and Reputation”, which is the most interesting section. Jennifer Harman’s reads “Jennifer Harman has often been underestimated as a poker player. Men used to see her as a little girl and did not consider her a rival. … Some controversy was built upon her when she married Marco Traniello in 2000 because he was only 23 years old (Jen was 36).”
But ultimately the success of the endeavor will depend on the strength of Ziigmund’s blogs, because they are the center pieces. Blogs have to be provocative. Itineraries and tournament schedules will lead to nowhere. But Ziigmund seems to have got stuck on those. The best one so far is on a blackjack bet. A friend bet Ziigmund that if he plays online blackjack in 2009 he will have to shell out for a €15k dinner. Ziigmund accepted the bet, agreed to shell out for the dinner but said that he cannot give up on the blackjack “because I’m winning from blackjack all the time and want to keep it that way.” If Ziigmund wants his site to succeed he should take several leaves out of Doyle Brunson’s book. That man can pack a punch with his words.
